TV turns black randomly but still has sound? But also works sometimes.

My tv sometimes works and then randomly turns black with the sound on. I have done all the resets, software updates, and checked hdmi ports. Sometimes the TV works like normal and then reverts back to the same issue. Video included

This is what it looks like. If you look closely it's glitchy and eventually the screen turns black

Hi @annanguyen60077,

What is the model number of the TV?

When the TV screen turns black but with the audio still being heard, try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the screen and check if you can see images at all.

If you can then there's a backlight problem i.e. the backlight LEDs are being turned off for some reason, faulty power board or mainboard perhaps.

Not sure if this will work as I don't know the model number, but disconnect the power to the TV and then remove the back cover from the TV.

Disconnect the mainboard - power board cable at the power board end.

Reconnect the power to the TV and turn it on.

The screen backlight lights should turn full on and stay on.

There will be no images or audio as the mainboard has been disconnected.

Be safety aware as there is exposed lethal AC voltage on the power board so turn off the TV and disconnect the power before touching anything in the back of the TV.

@jayeff, I tried that and I don't think it's a back light issue. Its completely back with no picture visible with light shining on it. It's odd because sometimes it'll work and the picture is normal and then it'll start glitching and turn black with the sound still on again.

Please Unaccept my answer as it didn't resolve the problem.

No video visible at all when the screen is black, may be a tcon board or mainboard

You could try leaving the back cover off and directing a fan at the tcon board first and see if it stays on without glitching. It may be that a component is overheating.

The tcon board is the board connected between the mainboard and the screen and has 4 ribbon cables connecting to the screen

Worth a try.

@jayeff thank you! I'll try that. I just can't justify throwing out an 82 inch tv less than 5 years old. It seems like a high possibility. It's odd because at times it'll work like normal and then after a couple hours it'll turn black again

That's the problem with intermittent faults. They're difficult to isolate at first as it takes time to narrow down to exactly where the problem may be as you have to wait for it to occur and then it has to stay like that while you check things out.

It's easier if it totally failed and stayed that way ;-)

@annanguyen60077 looking at your 2nd video at around the 0:06 mark, this looks like you are having actual panel issues. The way it powers the LCD screen up looks very much like failed/failing driver boards. At this time, for as long as you can still watch it, I would leave it. Once it fails you can remove the back cover and look at those boards. See if you can determine bad components etc. A "Tape Off' may also resolve this.
