MacBook Air 2017 suddenly entirely unresponsive

My mom's Macbook Air 2017 was plugging along fine until a couple days ago. She used it regularly for basic browsing, email, and zoom calls. On Monday morning, she used it for a bit, then closed the lid. But when she came back that evening and opened the lid, the screen refused to turn on. When she plugged in the cord, the cord light turned orange to indicate charging, but even after waiting a while for it to charge up, it wouldn't turn on. It appears to be stuck in a powered-off state.

I've tried everything on apple's troubleshooting page, including resetting the SMC, but to no avail.

A friend suggested that the battery might have gone bad, so I tried disconnecting the battery and powering it just from the power card, but it didn't work.

If anyone has any advice for what could have gone wrong or what to try next, I would be very appreciative.

I do think you need a new battery here. If I remember correctly, the system won’t respond without it being connected.

Is your mother attached to this system, that is, would she prefer sticking with it Vs getting a new system?

Based just on the systems age, it’s way passed needing a new battery.

We got a new battery for it just last year (had it done in a repair shop), so it’s hard to believe it could have gone bad so quickly.

@cicero92890 - Well that’s good!, what’s the color of the MagSafe charger LED? Amber or Green.

It’s amber, though it switches to green momentarily when I reset the SMC

@cicero92890 - If it stays Amber that’s a sign of either a bad battery or the charging logic is not charging for some reason.

Normally I would recommend getting this gem of an app CoconutBattery so we could dig deeper on why things aren’t working as you can’t get the system running we can’t discover which direction is needed here.

Let’s give this a try… Disconnect the battery again, with nothing connected press and hold the power button for a good 15 secs to fully discharge the logic board.

Now reconnect the battery, the system may spontaneously restart, let it fully boot up and quickly plug in the MagSafe charger and download CoconutBattery so you can get a better view of things. Take a snapshot of the Apps main window and post it here so we can see it too.
