Home button is non-responsive.

For the past couple of months now the home button on my ipod touch has been non-responsive. I've done all the googling I could and I have yet been able to find any source that straight forwardly (if that's a word) tells me how to remove the home button flex cable and replace it with a new one. I feel that the problem is not with the plastic home button that I press but rather a cable inside of the device and from everything I read on google it seems to be an issue with the flex cable. I know I can buy them for about 3-9 dollars but as I mentioned before I can't find a source to tell me in steps how to remove the old cable and replace it with a new one. Do any of you know what to do or should I give up and just leave it broken? Thank you for your help/suggestions.

I'm going to buck everything you read on google about it being your flex cable and say it's probably your home button spring. That spring gets compressed and needs to be pulled up a bit so it can once again make contact with the home button circuit.

The diagram for the home button is like this: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/215... In that image when the digitizer is in place 1 and 2 are in contact with each other and 3 and 4 are in contact with each other. The button just completes the final connection.

If you have a multimeter to check for continuity, you can press the home button on the digitizer and see if points 1 and 3 give you a "ring".

If it really is you flex cable then you can find one on ebay.

Thank you for your response. From your answer it sounds like I should first try to fix the spring. I don't have a multimeter and had to google what that is. I purchased the tools needed to open the ipod so when they arrive I will open it and try lifting the spring a bit and see if that helps. If not then I will go and buy the flex cable.

Hi, I just got the tools in the mail for opening the ipod (the two plastic opening tools) and the phillips screwdriver. However, its been about 2hours and I still haven't been able to open it and the plastic tools are beginning to break/bend as well. Do you have tips on how to open it? Thank you.
