Battery not recognized after battery change

Hi,

TLDR; my new battery works, but my computer can't recognize it. What can I do to fix it?

EDIT: It was the battery data cable that also needed to be replaced. Now everything works again!

More info:

I have a late 2020 M1 Macbook Pro (A2338) where the battery stopped working at the beginning of 2021, it only worked with the charger plugged in.

The local Apple repair shop said it was caused by water damage and wanted 1200 dollars to change the battery. Ever since they opened it to take a look, the battery icon has had an X over it, and the machine can't seem to recognize any battery at all. One of the clips was also non-functional, so I wonder if they did a rushed job.

Anyway, since this was a company laptop, my company decided to buy a new Macbook instead. A few weeks ago, I decided to buy an iFixit repair kit and change it myself.

The battery change went well, and I can now use the laptop without having the charger plugged in – which I take as a sign that the new battery is functional.

BUT – the battery icon is still an X, and the software can't seem to recognize it at all. This is, of course, not ideal, as I have no idea how much power is left on the battery when using it. It also seems like the computer shuts off sometimes without the battery actually being empty, but the software thinks it needs to go to sleep.

I did the calibration after the guidelines from the battery replacement guide: let it charge fully + 2 hrs, drained the battery (it held up for 5+ hours of looping four 4K videos and rendering several 4K footage in Premiere), and then charged it back up to 100% (I have no idea about actual percentage because it can't be read, but I left it long enough to be sure it was full).

Coconutbattery can't recognize the battery either.

I wonder if it might be the battery data/flex cable? The kit did not include this cable, and when taking a closer look, it looks like there might be some corrosion/damage.

Probably not related, but when I updated to Sonoma 14.1, my fan started going crazy and will not slow down without a third party software.

I've added some screenshots and a photo of the cable. Sorry about it being in Norwegian.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on what to try?

It’s hard to tell from the pictures of the cable, but this could definitely be an issue with that.

The battery on those talks to the logic board through 2 connections—the bus screw (the giant t5 one that holds the board to the battery board), and this little cable. The screw is to assist in actual power delivery from the battery to the board. The little cable is for all the battery data.

If it’s simply corroded, you may be able to clean that up with some isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab. But if the cable was corroded, the connector may have been too. It looks like that is the battery side of the cable, so would have had a new connector. I would also make sure the locking tab on both sides of the connector is present and locked. Those little ZIF connectors can be really fussy about connections.

The data cable being the issue seems logical, as the battery seems to be functioning fine, but the software can't recognize it.

There was no actual corrosion, sorry for being unclear, it just looks uneven/miscolored and perhaps damaged somehow. The photo is of the end closest to the fan.

I tried cleaning it with some 95% rubbing alcohol, reconnecting the cable, and checking the connectors on both sides several times without any luck.

I see that the cable is sold on the US iFixit site, but it's unfortunately not available on the European site. I will look some more, as changing the cable itself should probably be the next step.

Thanks for the reply!
