Frequency of memory after upgrade

I want to upgrade my Mac Pro 3.1 which is currently using 2 x 2.8 Xeon and 8GB 667 Mhz DDR2 memory.
I have 2 Xeon X5460 3.1GHz processors which are designed to work with 667 MHz memory in synchronous mode. I will use them for processor upgrade. What will happen if I also upgrade to 800 MHz memory in such a system? The Mac Pro will use the new memory in asynchronous mode at 800MHz or it will use it in synchronous mode with processor (Xeon X5460) at 667 MHz ?

The Xeon X5460 works fine on my Mac Pro 2008. The memory that is designed to work at 800MHz started at 667MHz.
That is what I wanted because overclocking is not limited by memory now - I can set FSB = 400(equals to "800"), for example, and memory will not stop me from running the processor at that frequency.

i think it will use it as asynchronous mode at 800MHZ and the 800MHZ memory will be a huge upgrade for your system

The main problem with such memory is its enormously huge price. 667MHz sticks are very cheap while the 800MHz ones are 5 times more expensive. So I want to be completely sure before making purchase.

The systems driver logic defines the RAM specs in these older systems. Review your exact system here Mac Pro listing

You are also limited to the CPUs listed in the given series. The reason is Apple locks the firmware to what the logic board can support.

I click the link and see that my system originally supports the 800MHz memory working synchronously with the processor. But currently I am using the 667 MHz memory working asynchronously with the processor designed to work synchronously with the 800MHz memory. So the systems driver logic should support both 667 MHz and 800 MHz memory sticks.

I also see my processor in the list of supported ones for my Mac (including stepping specs).

Looks like the previous owner had brains and replaced the expensive 800MHz sticks with the cheap 667MHz ones before selling this Mac to me.

So it is still not clear what will happen in case of using the processor designed for 667MHz memory (Xeon X5460) with the 800MHz memory. Will it work in synchronous or asynchronous mode.
