Sony STR-ZA810ES receiver stuck in CLEARING loop

The Problem

The unit displays CLEARING, flashing on the screen for a couple minutes... then you hear a relay "click", and it starts all over again... indefinitely (until you disconnect the electrical cord.)

This "CLEARING" loop error seems to happen commonly, and is usually the result of a botched (automatic) firmware update. This issue happens on a few different Sony models.

Seems hopeless...

I have tried every button-pressing-reset hack posted in Sony manuals and in online forums. I have also downloaded the latest firmware from Sony, but consumers cannot update the firmware without access to the unit's GUI (I tried).

The only two "fixes" I have seen recommended online:

  1. Send in the unit to Sony for repairs; and
  2. Replace the mainboard.

Replacing the mainboard is ridiculous (and expensive), so is sending the unit in to Sony (as this is out of warranty.) At that point, it makes sense to buy a new one.

This receiver is currently a very big paperweight. I would like to revive it, not recycle it! There must be a way to force-flash this firmware, even if it means connecting directly to one of the circuit boards...

The Question:

How can a somewhat tech-saavy person actually fix this CLEARING issue on their own?

Hi @jeffthomso70141

Not knowing exactly what "...every button-pressing-reset hack posted in Sony manuals and in online forums." entailed try the following and check if either one works.

i). Try the procedure as outlined in Initialize Mode on p.32 of the service manual.

ii). This one worked on my old Sherwood receiver which showed an unknown error code when turning on, presumably due to a software glitch. Disconnect the power to the device and then press and hold the Power button operated for a full minute and then release it. Reconnect the power and check if it turns on OK. It seemed that just disconnecting the power was not sufficient, regardless for how long. You had to drain the power from the systemboard for it to reset.

Apologies if you've been there, done that.

Yes, indeed I have "been there, done that". None of the buttons on the receiver are responsive while stuck in this CLEARING loop, unfortunately.

(I combed through the service manual as well.)

No button-pressing combination works. (I have tried every one that I could find online.)

I've held that power button down for minutes, with zero effect.

This issue seems to require something more serious (likely connecting directly to a PCB to directly reflash the unit.)

Thanks for trying though! :)
