Can't insert replacement keyboard cable

I damaged the keyboard cable while replacing the battery. I've got a new cable and have removed the logic board but the cable doesn't seem to want to fit or slide into the slot. The ribbon cable is very thin and just crumples up when trying to insert it. Is there a trick to making the connection? It almost appears that the table should slide all the way through the slot but I can't seem to get more than about 1/8 inch of the tab into the slot so there is no contact.

Hey, @patrickkel23873

Take a look at the production documents and the site you purchased a spare cable from. Make 100% certain that the cable you ordered is the cable you need, as I've seen this happen so many times where people order the wrong one and it doesn't end up working out. Good Luck.

Thank you, yes. I purchased from ifixit which has no documentation on this specific part. I did math it up to the original part and it does match.

That about right for this ZIF connection. If you've creased the cable you will have issues getting it in or making good contact within the compression area.

Does the thinner part of the cable slide all the way through so the gold contacts are "inside" the housing? I can't see a way to get the thicker part with the contacts fed into the slot.

@patrickkel23873 - Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) connectors can be tricky! For them to work there needs to be a compression system to force the connectors contacts onto the ribbon cables contacts. So as long as the compression lever is in the up position the threading of the ribbon cable end only needs to bottom out within the connector which isn’t very deep. For most setups the top most exposed contact area should just be at the edge of the connector and then folding down the latch should grab it. If you pull on the ribbon to hard you can pull it out. But you do need to make sure the cable is in squarely and not creased as that will prevent good contact.

How about posting some pics so we can see things. In focused and tight images of the connector and cable end and when you insert it both before you fold the connectors latch and afterwards.

@danj I don't see a lever on the connector. I must be missing something. I took pictures but I don't see an way to add those to the comment.

@patrickkel23873 - Can you post a picture so we are sure we are talking about the correct connector as the Keyboard side is different than the logic board side.

I might be too "new" to be able to post pictures. I don't have that option. I did get it to work though just now. The end of the connector needed to be worked in very slowly from side-to-side a tiny bit at a time with the tweezer looking tool.
