Any way to tell if overvoltage occurred?

This night, after a thunder strike my Mac Mini 2018 shut down, and my display said "No Signal". I turned it back on a minute later or so and yet I can not detect damage.

I wonder if it was a brief outage or overvoltage. I have a power strip connected to a wall outlet, and all my devices are connected to this strip.

I looked for previous shutdown causes/codes.

Actually, I managed to find the shutdown code which is -3

According to this:

-3 indicates thermal issues.

Just for grins, I pulled the power strip off the wall socket to see what shutdown code would I get, and interestingly I again got shutdown code -3.

Do these indicate that brief outage was a more likely cause than a power surge?

Over voltage would have damaged something, thats not always what happens when a lightning strike is near. Between you and the strike is a transformer which also has a fuse element within it. Hopefully it burns not allowing the high voltage flow through. Even still the entry into your home isn't always the power line! Often when the strike is near it will come in through other pathways like telephone or cable services or even via your own external lighting or exterior buildings which are served from a common power source. And if the ground is moist lightning also can come in via the ground service of your building! So while the power feeds are clean the ground is hot!

So if the hit was far enough away then the disruption is what you encountered. A good surge suppressor will prevent harm but it too has only one life to give! You may want to replace it soon as they do loose there effectiveness over time as the components do wear from the hits.

If this is a common issue, then maybe you want to invest into a good UPS. Mine as an example has an App which allows me to record over time the voltage and frequency of the power as well as offer an alert when power is disrupted or when a over voltage even happens and even offers a clean shutdown if I'm not home.

What brand of UPS you are using exactly? Also, did it ever confirm an overvoltage incident?

@matthewbla65516 - I have a APC BackUPS 1500 for my Mac Pro. Here’s the newer version of what I have APC 1500 BackupUPS you could go with a smaller unit 700 is about the smallest I would go if you are doing any heavy processing.

Yep in the middle of the night waking me up!
