Problems with my 2 iMac G4

Hello,

I have inherited seven iMac G4s, two of them 17 inches.

As I don't have much experience in computer repair, I would like your advice.

The first, when I plugged it in, there was only the ventilation as a sign of life, so I unplugged it and dismantled it.

I removed the two ram strips to see if that would change anything, then I removed the non-essential internal peripherals (hard disk, cd drive).

All my manipulations didn't change a thing, the result was the same as at the start, simply a black screen and ventilation...

For the second one, I did the same thing, but again, nothing changed.

The symptoms are: when I press the power button, the fan runs for about a second and then nothing after that.

Have a nice day!

Amaury from France

This series had a few issues that could be your problem. The first is bad electrolytic capacitors within the power supply and within the CCFL inverter. This was an industry wide issue as there was a flood of bad caps being sold. Often a good inspection will allow you to see leakage and often swollen. Here’s more on it Capacitor Plague

The backlights used is a CCFL basically a small fluorescent light that sits on the sides of the LCD panel. Using a flashlight pressed against the screen at a sharp angle on your reassembled system. The systems display should offer a faint image if not the backlight power inverter and/or CCFL bulbs need replacement.
