MBP 15" kernel panic, GPU error

Hi everyone, a friend had a MBP 15" A1286 Mid 2010 with sudden restarts and the report said something about kernel and GPU (honestly don't know how to read it), made some test to try get the computer working normal, searching about this issue found something about a common problem in this model with the graphics card and get solved with a patch, installed the patch as the instruction says (the "MBPMid2010-GPU-Fix-0.6.1" patch return a message saying that it was patched successfully), however, the problem continued with the only difference that now it takes longer for it to happen. Also tried different HDD with newer system (my friend was on Yosemite and made some test with High Sierra) and different RAM modules (same brand and speed), but the issue continued.

The logic conclusion I got was that it was a Logic Board issue and had to be replaced, so we bought a new one from eBay (good reputation, arrived in great condition also), when we received we also upgrade to an SSD and replaced the logic board. To our surprise, the problem persist even doing SMC, NVRAM and installing the patch again.

Honestly, I no longer know what can be causing this issue since almost everything inside is new, unless is a problem related with: display assembly, battery, ODD or top case (being the only things that remain the same). Anyone knows what can be causing this problem? Any help would be very appreciated

What is the current SSD make and model? The 2011 and older systems do have some issues which could be your root issues here.

The SSD is Western Digital Green 240GB

@alejandrop15221 - This SSD is too fast for your system! Your system requires a SATA II (3.0 Gbps) drive the WD Green drive is a fixed speed SATA III (6.0 Gbps).

Ok, I'll consider this issue to do some tests with a slower HD. However, the problem originally happened with the HDD that came with the computer, this kernel GPU restart might be caused by a HD issue all along? and the problem occur with other types of HD because of communication speed?

@alejandrop15221 - If it was an issue before with the original HDD then the drive may have been failing or needed defragmentation! HDD's need a bit of TLC to work flawlessly. Different graphics services use RAM and drive storage differently!

"This system has dual graphics processors -- a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 SDRAM and Intel HD Graphics with 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory. The system automatically switches between graphics systems based on use (when applications use OpenGL, Core Graphics or other graphically demanding technologies, the system will use the dedicated graphics card"

Within the Intel graphics engine it uses standard RAM and virtual RAM (HD space) when the NVIDIA graphics is used the dedicated graphics RAM is used.

@alejandrop15221 - I'm suspecting your issue is with the drives (either HDD or SSD) but for different reasons! the HDD as its fragmented! And for the SSD the I/O speed between the drive and the system was not properly set. There are SSD's which are fixed speed and others which auto sense the systems I/O and match it!

As an example the Samsung 2.5 drives do that Samsung 860 EVO

"Interface: SATA 6 Gbps Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gbps & 1.5 Gbps interfaces"

So unless it clearly states it within the drives spec sheet its a fixed speed SATA III drive.

It sounds like a Ram problem, I have had it happened

to me in the past with the same warning, unfortunately it’s soldered memory
