Finding a use for my N800

I'm struggling to find a use for my N800 since getting my netbook and android phone. I used to use it for maps and clock and sofa web surfing. It is too slow and too small for big tasks and too big and too limited for small tasks. It sits in a drawer doing nothing.

Short of selling it, what can I use the N800 for?

The Nokia N800 would make an awesome multimedia car audio device. Depending on how involved you want to get with re-purposing the device, you can do something like this:

Purchase some SDHC cards (looks like you can put up two 32 GB cards!), post a teardown on iFixit of it and take out the screen from the rest of the device, and fashion a custom display case for your car. Then, tuck away the rest of the hardware internals into your dash and route the appropriate wiring to your stereo head unit, which hopefully has Audio-In or AUX-in jacks. The installation is a bit more complex than that, but you get the idea.

With this new-fangled device you'll be able to play MP3s directly from your stereo, use it to make free teleconference phone calls via Skype wherever you find Wi-Fi (great for emergencies or to save on minutes), use the webcam feature to monitor entry and egress from your car (great if the car's stolen or if you need to blackmail family/roommates) -- the possibilities are endless.

Another user mentioned using it as a GPS, but I'm not educated enough with the device to know for sure if you can do that. It doesn't seem to include GPS capability from what I see on Wikipedia, but I may be wrong. That would certainly be another incentive for using it in the car.

Could you load music onto a SD card and then hook it up to your hi-fi system as a music player?

Using the 3.5mm jack plug as the output with RCA connections to your amplifier.

This is what I do with my iPod and iPhone.

I personally would use it as a back up cell, even if it's slow

The N800 is not a cell phone. It just an internet device.

I'm liking the idea of setting it up as a stationary media player. I never really considered it's function if it was constantly plugged in. I'm wishing it had video out now!

Some thoughts for what I can do:

1. clock/alarm clock

2. audio media center (on the SD or streaming or pandora)

3. some weather app (kind of like a chumby)

I'll update here if I can find the apps to do these.

I agree on the media player.

Engadget also had a few ideas on it's site, such as a second monitor. http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/nokia...

I'd say it sounds like it has been superseded, get it sold whilst it is still worth something to somebody else.

It's a nice little gadget, you can use it as an MP3 player, but you should keep it if possible

Two solid uses:

1) GPS, has nice big screen

2) multimedia device

or:

1) sell it

2) scrap it for parts

1) Home Multimedia source (as previously mentioned)

2) cordless long distance phone (Skype) better than sitting at your computer during those excruciating "calls to mom back home"

3) Build a custom mount for it, with power. Making a really cool chair armrest, of nifty kitchen information station, etc... Perhaps build it into the wall in a garage or basement, somewhere you dont already have a computer... could still be plugged into speakers to use as entertainment centre for that area as well...

Use it as a kitchen tool for quick look ups of recipes and such

or

http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-n770-remot... use its a remote control for a boxee install on a macmini hooked up to your tv or an apple tv running boxee.

use it with a full sized bluetooth keyboard or the apple aluminum keyboard http://cs.gmu.edu/~sean/stuff/n800/keybo... as a dedicated writing and email station. This is how i use mine, also use it to have IM running in the living room when i'm watching something on TV.

Mine sits on my bathroom counter and gets used as a radio and streaming MP3 player every day. It has decent enough speakers on it for my purposes, anyway.

It's worth far more to me than what I'd get if I sold it, and keeps me from dripping water on my iPhone and iPad -- in this case a stylus is better than using a touch only device

i love my N800! i use it as a multimedia device around the house or campus(listen to music, stream audio and video back to my pc from class{helps if its boring}) i use it as a remote via vnc. when im home studying i have it hooked up to my speaker system and listen to music that way.its great for skype video calls or google chat.you can use gps with it but you have to buy an external gps reciever and connect via bluetooth(havent done this yet but will shortly) even though its considered out dated by most, its still a great little device. another user stated streaming pandora on it. i have the app but for some reason i cant get it to work. i have checked online and at internettablettalk.com to try to get it to work, no go so far. i have a mini bluetooth keyboard for it for email and instant messaging with pidgin.

i personally say keep it.
