Can I replace the matte screen coating?

I started cleaning my MBP Anti-Glare Hi-Res screen with a mixture of 70% alcohol and water (there was probably more alcohol than water). To sum it up, I now have a bunch of horizontal and vertical streaks going across my screen that are clearly visible in any sort of glare. Is there a way to replace the matte coating/layer? Or do I have to buy an entire display assembly?

Solution retenue

Chemicals of any sort are not recommended for use on any display because, as you found out, they can actually dissolve the coatings applied to them.

You might try one of these to see if it hides the damage. It would be a good inexpensive first DIY "fix". If it doesn't hide or cover the streaks you'll have to replace the entire LCD display, as does not have a glass cover. FWIW it may be a simpler DIY to replace the topcover with LCD integrated as a single unit than trying to remove and replace the LCD itself.

It is very doubtful that you actually damaged the antiglare layer. It is far more likely that the streaks are merely caused by dried residuals. That is why it is recommended against, and why things like Windex have to be specially formulated not to leave streaks (as both alcohol and ammonia are prone to do). There is a good chance that you can rid your machine of these streaks by employing a specialty screen cleaning fluid and rubbing with a microfibre cloth.

I have to reiterate, it is very improbable that your display coating was affected by your cleaning solution. IPA does not dissolve the anti-glare coating on Mac screens. Instead, it leaves a residue inside the grooves of the matte coating. These can be removed with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
