Short Battery Life

The battery runs out of charge more quickly than expected.

Your laptop settings may be causing it to lose charge faster than normal

Different settings on computers lead to different power usage. Decreasing the screen brightness or setting the device to “battery saver” can help give laptops a longer battery life. These settings, “battery saver” mode in particular, can impact the performance of the device.

Programs may be running that consume a lot of power

Programs like games, photo and video editing software, or even web browsers with many tabs open can all consume significant system resources on your computer. This often requires the laptop to use more power to run them. Try closing programs and web browser tabs that you are not using to extend your battery life.

There may be unnecessary wireless connections

When the laptop connects wirelessly, whether to the internet over WiFi or to another device over a Bluetooth connection, it uses more power than normal. Try ending Bluetooth or WiFi connections when you are not using them.

The battery itself may be worn down or in poor health

If your laptop continues to run out of battery quickly, the battery itself may need to be replaced. To check the health of your battery, open the command prompt from the Windows start menu. Then enter the command:

powercfg /batteryreport

and press enter. This generates a report on your battery’s health, which you can view by going to the directory given by the command and opening the file. Once you open the report you can see two values: Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity. If Full Charge Capacity is significantly smaller than Design Capacity, your battery is in poor health and replacing it will improve your battery life.

Windows Does Not Boot

The computer turns on but doesn’t start windows.

Recent corruption or harmful changes to the operating system

You should attempt to boot Windows in safe mode. This loads the operating system with the minimum drivers needed so that you can easier access files and settings. If you can not, or do not know how to boot windows in safe mode, see this guide from ASUS support.

From this point, you should attempt to use System Restore to reset the operating system to a state before it started malfunctioning. If this does not work, you should uninstall any recently installed programs or hardware drivers as they may be the source of the issue.

The operating system is damaged beyond recovery

If you cannot resolve the issue with system restore or safe mode you may need to wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows. If your files are not backed up you should follow the Hard Drive Replacement guide in order to remove the hard drive from your device and then back up your files to another device. After putting the hard drive back in your laptop you can install windows off of a flash drive. The process for this is covered in this Windows documentation.

When prompted to choose a drive to install windows onto, select “Drive Options” and then “Format” so that it wipes your hard drive (and any corrupted files) during the install. After the installation finishes and you have confirmed Windows runs you can move your backed up files back onto your hard drive

The hard drive needs to be replaced

If your device still does not work (or you can’t even reinstall windows) your hard drive may be broken and need replacing. Follow this guide to replace your hard drive.

WiFi Not Working

The computer cannot connect to Wifi. Restart your computer before moving on to the following steps.

Incorrect WiFi Settings.

Some of the most common issues that cause WiFi not to work are that your device is out of range of the network, the credentials being used to access the network are incorrect, or the WiFi settings are incorrect. Simply ensure that your device is within range of the router and that your credentials (password and etc.) are correct. If your device still cannot connect to the WiFi, try resetting the network, if you have access to it. This can be done in a few simple steps. First, unplug the modem and router from both power and internet sources and wait about two minutes for the modem to shut down and clear its cache. Next, plug the modem back in, being sure that each light on the modem is either on or flashing before moving on to the next step. Then, reattach the router and attempt to reconnect to the Wifi on your device.

Drivers need to be reinstalled

Another issue that can affect your computer’s ability to connect to the WiFi is if the drivers need to be reinstalled. This can be done by opening the Device Manager by holding down the Windows Key and pressing the X key on your keyboard. In the menu that appears, select Device Manager. This will open a list of devices installed on your system. Find the arrow beside the driver you wish to reinstall and click it to expand that driver’s details. Then, right-click the driver you wish to reinstall and select “Uninstall”. The device may ask you for confirmation via a dialogue box. Press okay, then restart your computer to finish uninstalling the device. Upon restarting the computer, it should notify you that it is installing the device driver software.

Network Card needs to be replaced

If you still can not connect to Wifi and do not see any available networks it is likely that your network card needs to be replaced. Here is a link to replacing the part.

Bluetooth Not Functioning

Bluetooth devices can not connect or continuously disconnect from the computer.

Too far away

The Bluetooth device you are trying to connect could simply be out of range. Most common Bluetooth devices have a range of 33 feet, however, some devices could have shorter ranges. If experiencing this problem, try moving the devices you are trying to connect closer together.

Other device is not functioning

Bluetooth problems can be caused by either the device you are trying to connect or the laptop. One way to make sure the computer’s Bluetooth is the problem is by trying to connect the other device to another computer with Bluetooth capabilities. Once you are sure the device you are trying to connect is not the problem, then move on to the following steps.

Drivers need to be updated

A common problem with Bluetooth is out of date drivers. There are many guides to update drivers such as this one or this one or a more direct way to update drivers here.

Drivers need to be reinstalled

If your drivers are up to date or updating them did not solve the problem than completely uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers could work. Following the first steps of this guide and uninstall the driver rather than updating it.

You can then use this web page to reinstall the drivers.

Network Card needs to be replaced

If your Bluetooth still isn’t working then there may be a problem with the Network Card. The Network Card provides a connection to Wifi as well as Bluetooth connection. Here is a replacement guide.

The Computer is Too Hot

The computer heats up to an unusually high temperature.

Blocked vents inhibit cooling

Make sure that the vents and inlets on the device are exposed to air (as opposed to on a surface like a bed, which restricts airflow). When they are blocked, the laptop cannot cool itself as effectively, which can cause overheating issues.

Dust in the device causes poor cooling performance

Similar to how placing the device on a surface like a bed can inhibit cooling by blocking the laptop’s vents, dust can also restrict airflow and cause the laptop to heat up. Check the vents for dust and clear any dust out that you can see. If this does not solve the cooling issues, then there may still be dust inside the laptop. Follow the first few steps of the CPU fan replacement guide in order to open up the device and then clean any dust out of it before putting it back together.

Broken CPU fan

If the laptop continues to overheat, it is likely that the CPU Fan is malfunctioning and requires replacement. Follow this link to the replacement guide for the CPU fan.

Touchpad Not Responding

The touchpad mouse for the computer is not responding correctly or not working. An external mouse will need to be used for these fixes.

Touchpad is not enabled

If your touchpad is not responding to your gestures, it may be because the touchpad is off or disabled. This may be because a key combination was pressed that turns off the touchpad. Usually, this includes the Fn key and a key at the top of the keyboard with the image of a touchpad on it. Pressing these keys together may solve the problem. If they don’t, however, another place to do this is in the device settings for the touchpad. The option to turn the touchpad on or off will be at the top of the page. The touchpad can also be disabled or enabled in the properties of the mouse, which can be found in additional settings, under related settings on the same page. Simply select the touchpad under the hardware page here, click properties, use the change settings button, then enable the device on the driver page. The computer administrator will need to do these last steps.

The drivers are out of date

Another reason that the touchpad may not be working is that the drivers which enable communication between the computer and the device are out of date. The drivers can be found in the touchpad properties, and can only be accessed by the computer's administrator. There, in the drivers tab, the drivers can be updated automatically, or they can be searched for by the user, manually. ASUS has the most recent drivers for each of their devices and their hardware on their website and can be downloaded for free.

The touchpad is faulty or broken

If neither of the above options solves your problem, it may be because the touchpad on the computer is broken. This can happen in a number of ways, such as physical damage or simply normal wear over time. You can remove and replace the touchpad by yourself using a guide, or you can take your device to an expert and they can sort it out for you.
