Computer Will Not Turn On

When I press the power button the computer does not power on

Faulty Power Adapter

First, begin by attempting to plug in the device to check and see if the battery is dead. If the device still does not turn on ensure that the charger light on the charger and computer are on to check for a faulty power cord.

RAM and Temporary Files Overload

The next step is to attempt to restart the device. Begin by disconnecting the charger from the computer and the wall plug. After letting it sit for at least 60 seconds, reconnect the device to power and press and hold the power button for 10 seconds and then release and immediately do a press and release of the power button again.

Improper Ventilation

Your computer generates heat as it runs so if the air vents are obstructed it can cause the computer to overheat and the fans to run excessively and loudly. This normally happens when a computer is placed on a soft surface such as a mattress or a blanket. To prevent this from happening, place your computer on a hard surface in a cool room where the air vents are not blocked. The Dell’s ventilation is located on the bottom of the laptop.

BIOS and Device Drivers are Overheating the Device

The next step is to update the BIOS and device drivers. To complete these updates you can follow this guide.

Dirty Air Vents or Damaged Fans

The final resort is to clean the air vents on the computer by following this guide. If this does not work there may be physical damage to the actual fans in the computer. To check and replace any damaged fans you can follow these steps.

You should also check that the charge is fully plugged into the wall to provide a power source. To check that is charging you can look at the charging indicator light on the side of the computer, next to the charging port.

Faulty power-adapter port

If the device appears to not hold a charge, the power-adapter port may need to be replaced. With a faulty port, the device is not getting power while plugged in. To fix this, attempt to fully clean out the port. If this does not work, the port will need to be replaced.

Faulty Battery

If the power port is working and the device is properly plugged in but still won’t hold a charge, the battery is faulty and needs to be replaced.
