Battery Failing To Hold A Charge

Your laptop will not turn on or will not stay turned on once unplugged from the charger.

Faulty Power Adapter

Ensure the charge light is on when the power adapter is plugged in to the device. If the power adapter is plugged in, and the charge light is not on, the power adapter is faulty and should be replaced.

Faulty Battery

If the power adapter is plugged in and the charge light is on, remove power adapter after charging for at least 15 minutes. After removing the power adapter, check the battery percentage to see if it has been charged. If the laptop powers off after removing power adapter and only powers on when the power adapter is plugged in, then the battery is faulty. Replace the battery using this guide.

Device is Overheating

Computer freezes occasionally and powers off suddenly, loud cooling fan, computer gets very hot.

Dust in Vents or Fans

Computers overheat due to an accumulation of dust in the vents and fans, which inhibits the cooling fan from properly reducing heat, leading to heat built up. To fix this, make sure the computer is turned off, and the power adapter is unplugged. Use compressed air to remove dust from vents. Cooling vents are located on the side, the back, and the bottom. You can also use a hair dryer in cool air mode. To access the cooling fan, remove the five nails with a screwdriver located in the four corners and the middle of the bottom of the laptop.

No Audio or Audio is Distorted Through Speakers

You have trouble listening to sound on your computers speakers.

Software Needs Updating

Test audio through the computer speakers, then test it using headphones. If the audio is only murky while using both headphones and speakers your audio software may need updating. To know if you need to update your software open the device manager by right clicking on the WINDOWS logo. A small list should appear and then click on DEVICE MANAGER.

Once DEVICE MANAGER opens click on the right facing arrow Sound, video and game controllers. Realtek Audio CODEC or IDT HIGH DEFINITION CODEC should appear depending on which one you have. Right click and select Update Driver.

There will be a new window and click on “Browse my computer for driver software” and then click on the option for “Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer”

Next Click on the driver labeled “High Definition Audio Device” to select it and click Next. A warning message will appear , click on “Yes” and your HP Pavilion should perform an update for the driver.

If speakers do not work after updating the software, your computer may have faulty speakers.

Faulty Speakers

Test audio using headphones, then test through the computer speakers. If the audio is only distorted while listening via speakers, the speakers themselves may be faulty. Replace the speakers by using this guide

Distorted Audio Output Over Headphones

You have trouble listening to sound with headphones.

Headphone Problem

If audio output is regular through speakers and only distorted when using headphones, try switching headphones to ensure it is not the headphones problem. Do this step with no other electronic devices next to the computer because that might cause interference.

Software Needs Updating

Test audio through the computer speakers, then test it using headphones. If the audio is only distorted while listening via headphones, you may need to update your softwar. Refer to the above section titled "Software Needs Updating" under the "Faulty Speakers" section to update.

Loose Headphone Jack

Test audio through the computer speakers, then test it using headphones. If the audio is only distorted while listening via headphones, the audio jack or the headphones themselves may be faulty. Audio that cuts in and out is often a sign of a faulty audio jack, to replace the audio jack use this guide.

Failure to Turn on

Your computer is not turning on when pressing the POWER button.

Improper AC Adaptor

If your AC adapter is damaged or faulty your computer will charge, therefore your battery may be dead and computer will not turn on.

Faulty Ram

Another symptom may be that your RAM is faulty. First perform a Hard Reset by releasing the latches that hold the battery cell and take the battery out. Hold the POWER button down for about 30 seconds. Plug the AC adapter into the charging port of your device. Press the POWER button to reboot the device. If your computer is continually not responding you may have a faulty RAM. To fix this issue you may need to boot without one RAM stick or you may need to completely replace one or both of them, depending on how many your computer has. To Replace the RAM use this guide.
