When you press the power button, your laptop does not turn on.
If the computer turns on only when the power adapter is plugged in and the power indicator light on the bottom left (shown with a plug graphic) is lit up, the battery may be dead. To fix this, you can either leave the computer plugged in during use or replace the battery.
If the power adapter is plugged in, but the power indicator light on the bottom left does not light up, this indicates that the power adapter is faulty. This will prevent the battery from charging and eventually, the computer from turning on. It needs to be replaced.
If the battery and power adapter are functional, but the power indicator light on your bottom left does not light up, the power input jack could be faulty. If you have another compatible laptop, try your battery and power adapter on that laptop. If that laptop turns on, the power input jack on your laptop is broken and needs to be replaced. Refer to the manufacturer.
Laptop is on but, the screen is dark and nothing is visible.
The display may have been accidentally disabled. To check this, press the “Fn” key in the lower corner of the keyboard in conjunction with the “F2” key. This should re-enable the display if it has been disabled by accident.
If the computer is on, but the screen is black and unresponsive, the screen may be faulty. To test this, connect the computer to an external monitor using a VGA cable. If the connected monitor displays what is on the computer, the computer's display screen needs to be replaced - refer to the manufacturer.
Your screen is showing, but does not respond to your mouse or keyboard.
All of the RAM may be in use and your laptop cannot complete any processes; this causes the screen to freeze and become unresponsive. Restart your laptop. If your laptop is still slow and freezes, you may want to replace or upgrade your RAM.
The cause of a frozen screen may be an internal system error. This can be caused by internal damage to the motherboard, stopping the computer from displaying images on the computer screen. In this case, the motherboard may need be to be reconnected or the entire motherboard is broken. The entire laptop may need to be replaced. Refer to the manufacturer for motherboard repair or to recover your data.
Your touchpad is not responding to touch.
The touchpad could have been disabled by pressing the “F9” key. To enable the touchpad, press the function key “Fn” in conjunction with the “F9” key. If your touchpad is still unresponsive, it may have been turned off internally (see below).
It is possible that the touchpad could have been disabled through the control panel of the laptop. Go to your “Control Panel” and select “Devices.” From here select “Touchpad” and check to see if the touchpad has been disabled. If it has been disabled, re-enable it.
While working, your laptop becomes very hot and then shuts off.
Excessive dust and materials can get stuck in vents and fans. To fix this problem, take a compressed air cleaner and carefully blow out the dust/materials from the vents and fans on the bottom of your laptop.
If the bottom of the laptop feels very hot during use, check to see if the fans are working.
When your laptop is on, turn it upside-down and place your hand over the vent on the bottom right. You should be able to hear the fan and feel air coming out of it. If not, the fan may be broken, which causes the computer to overheat and freeze. To fix this, view replace the fan.
The laptop turns on, but does not load the operating system and shows a blinking error message. It may also be repeatedly making three consecutive beeping noises.
Dropping the laptop can cause shock, and thus the RAM to detach. This detachment can cause the three beeping noises that indicates that the device cannot properly load the operating system. If these issues continue, your RAM modules may be damaged or dead. To fix this, you can re-install or replace the RAM.
If your laptop shows an error message with a blinking line after turning on, the hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced. You may be able to recover your data if you take the laptop to the manufacturers.
Sound is not coming from your speakers.
The sound on your computer may be turned off. To check this, open up Control Panel by accessing the Start Menu, then select Sound and Audio Devices. Make sure that the mute box is not checked.
Your speakers may not be synced with your computer. Open up Control Panel by accessing the Start Menu, then select Sound and Audio Devices and go to the Audio tab. Check to see that the correct device is selected under Sound Playback. If this does not work, reinstall the drivers for the sound card.
If your speakers still are not working, they may be broken. To check this, attach working external speakers or headphones to the audio jack on the left side of the computer. If you can hear sound from these external devices, your speakers are likely broken and need to be replaced - refer to the manufacturer.
The speakers may not be working due to an internal problem. To check this, attach working external speakers or headphones to the audio jack on the left side of the computer. If you cannot hear sound from these external devices, your sound card is broken. In this case, the motherboard may need be to be reconnected or the entire motherboard is broken. The entire laptop may need to be replaced. Refer to the manufacturer for motherboard repair or to recover your data.
You cannot connect to wireless networks (WiFi).
Your laptop may have its wireless antennae switched off. Below the keyboard on the front lip of the laptop is a wireless antenna switch. Turn it on if it is off.
If the wireless antenna switch is on, but you cannot connect to networks, your laptop may have its wireless software off. To check this, go to your Control Panel by accessing the Start Menu and select Network and Internet. Open Network Settings and turn on the wireless feature. If the wireless feature is already on, but not working, turn it off then on again.
Your wireless may not be working due to a faulty wireless card. If you still cannot connect to any working networks, your wireless card is broken and must be replaced.
