The Basics
- Power Cycle your Console: Power cycle your Xbox 360 by unplugging it from the power source and waiting at least 10 seconds before plugging it back in. This is the first step in troubleshooting any electronic device.
- Ensure your AV cable is connected. If the console does not have an AV cable, it will display a full red ring.
- Understand your specific Red Ring: If you see a red ring on your console, it is split into four quadrants representing its state. Quadrants Q1, Q2, Q4, and Q3 are clockwise from the upper left. Hardware failure is the most common error, which illuminates Q1, Q3, and Q4. You should also note any two-digit error codes on a connected display.
- A secondary error code provides more detailed information about the affected components, as explained in the Hardware Failure Section.
Console is Overheating
Solution: See cooling tips for your console on our Xbox Overheating page
If quadrants Q1 and Q3 are lit up, your console is getting too hot. Go to the iFixit Xbox Overheating troubleshooting page and see if you can find a solution.
Faulty AV Cabe
Solution: Replace the AV cable with a new one or with an HDMI cable
If you notice that all four quadrants of the power button are illuminated red, this typically indicates an issue with your console's console's
- Test with a replacement AV cable: Inspect the cable; if it is damaged, consider replacing it with a new one.
- Replace the AV cable with an HDMI cable: If you have an HD television, you may want to consider upgrading to an HDMI cable since this error does not occur with HDMI consoles.
Hardware Failure
Solution: Check the secondary error codes and replace the needed components
This last troubleshooting step might require you to have microsoldering skills and equipment. If you've made it this far, consider reflowing your Xbox 360 motherboard and using iFixit's Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death Fix guide and kit.
If quadrants Q1, Q2, or Q4 are illuminated, or only Q4, it indicates hardware failure. Several issues, mostly from CPU, GPU, or eDRAM damage, cause this error.
Check your console’s secondary error codes for more specific information about affected components. The Console Mods Wiki lists code meanings.
- Hold down the sync button and press eject 4 times.
- Each time you press eject, a certain number of the quadrants of the ring will flash.
- Four lights signify 0
- One light signifies 1
- Two lights signify 2
- Three lights signify 3.
- Example: 4 lights 3 times, followed by one light once, means you have error code 0001, which indicates an issue with the V_12P0 rail components.
These codes can reveal which motherboard components have failed and, if you’re brave, pinpoint which component needs replacing.
