Background and Identification
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover vehicle produced by Ford starting in 2000 for the 2001 model year. The Escape is a five-door SUV with a front-engine layout and either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. The Ford Escape was developed and released with Mazda, a Japanese automaker, which sold its version as the Mazda Tribute.
The Mazda Tribute and the Ford Escape share the same roof and floor panels and contain the same underpinnings constructed from the Ford CD2 platform. Ford provided the optional V6 engine while Mazda supplied powertrains with respect to the base inline-four engine.
The second-generation Ford Escape was introduced in 2006 but began production in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The third-generation Escape was released in 2012 for the 2013 model year. Most of the internals of previous model years were carried over for the 2008 Escape but included a new electronic stability control system and the Ford family navigation system. The second-generation Escape also received some exterior styling changes including a new grille with larger headlamps, cleaner body lines, and rounder wheel arches. The second-generation Ford Escape and its sibling, the Mercury Mariner, featured Ford’s pull-drift steering mode.
Ford vehicles can be identified by the blue ovoid ‘Ford’ logo, usually adorned on the hood and the center of the trunk, which has been in use since 1927. Ford Escape vehicles include the name “Escape” in capital letters on the left-hand side of the cars’ rear ends.
