Background and Identification

A CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine is a device that delivers continuous air pressure so that the user’s airway doesn’t collapse or become obstructed. The result is that the user will be able to breath freely. It is used to treat breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea in adults and respiratory distress syndrome in infants.

A typical machine according to the NIH, “includes a mask or other device that fits over your nose or your nose and mouth, straps to position the mask, a tube that connects the mask to the machine’s motor, and a motor that blows air into the tube.” Some machines also include a humidifier as well.

In March 2020, it was suggested that CPAP’s could be used to support patients with COVID-19 however, they also recommended that air filtration be used to avoid infection spread.
