Background and Identification

In September 2013, Samsung released the Galaxy Gear—their first smartwatch on the market. The device was available in black, lime green, rose gold, mocha grey, oatmeal beige, and wild orange. It features an Exynos SoC, a 1.63'' 320 by 320 Super AMOLED display, and 4 GB of storage with 512 MB of RAM. The Gear also comes equipped with a 1.9 megapixel, 720p back-illuminated sensor camera and a couple noise-cancelling microphones. It originally ran on Android 4.3, although in 2014 Samsung replaced it with Tizen OS.

Currently, the Samsung Galaxy Gear's successor is the Galaxy Gear 2. A notable difference between the Gear and Gear 2 is the Gear 2's interactive button towards the bottom of the screen. The Gear 2's camera also has a slimmer presence rather than bulging out like its predecessor. As the first one of its kind, the Galaxy Gear has paved the way for smartwatch technology and the integration of mobile operating systems into everyday accessories.
