The 5th Generation iPod Touch was originally released in September 2012 as 32 and 64 GB models. Apple released a lower cost 5th Generation iPod Touch 16 GB model in May 2013 that lacked the rear-facing camera and wrist-strap peg on the more expensive models. This lower cost model was consequently succeeded by 5th Generation iPod Touch 16 GB 2014 model which regained the features of the more expensive models the 2013 model lacked.
5th Generation iPod Touch 2012
The 5th Generation iPod Touch was announced on September 12, 2012, and released October 10, 2012, with 32 and 64 GB models available. New features to the 5th Generation Touch include: Lightning port dock connector, a 4-inch screen, Siri, and new color choices.
The 5th Generation iPod Touch is is powered by the A5 Processor, and the new version of the iOS software, iOS 6.
5th Generation iPod Touch 16 GB 2013
After the success of the 5th Generation iPod Touch in 32 and 64 GB options, Apple released a lower cost version with 16 GB of storage, and no rear-facing camera or wrist-strap peg on May 31, 2013.
5th Generation iPod Touch 16 GB 2014
For this revision of the entry-level, 16 GB version of the iPod Touch 5th Generation, Apple introduced several features previously reserved for the 32 and 64 GB models: a 5 megapixel rear-facing iSight camera, wrist-strap peg, and a choice of five colors: pink, yellow, blue, silver, space gray and (PRODUCT)RED.
As before, the iPod Touch features a 4-inch Retina display. The device is powered by Apple's A5 processor and ships with iOS 7.
The model number, A1421, matches that of the rest of the iPod Touch line.
