we have a airport extreme 5th gen. unit has quit working i.e. like no power, light is not on. Power supply checks good. does this unit have a fuse or ? or is it just dead now ?

Hard to tell here if you can fix it without opening it up and testing a few points for voltage.
Are you able to solder SMT devices? Do you have a DVM? Do you have the skills to diagnose electrical circuits?

My AirPort Extreme has the same problem and I'd love to crack it open and start troubleshooting. I just wouldn't know where to start.

Did you review the IFIXIT guides? Apple AirPort Extreme Model A1143 While these explain the action of replacing parts it doesn't get into the brass tacks of understanding microelectronics.

Listen to the power supply (right next to your ear!). Can you hear a screech each time the green LEDs on the ethernet ports blink on and off? I tested mine with a multimeter and while it delivers 12V, it is not supplying the necessary power for the AEBS. You can buy replacement power supplies on Amazon or eBay for very little dough. Cheaper than buying a new WiFi router anyway.

I plugged in the power supply and instantly heard the screeching sound. Plugged into Airport and it became intermittent but no light turned on the Airport extreme. So I am going with replacing the power supply. It quit after a power outage.
Dead power supplies still show 12VDC when a meter is applied. They just don't supply the power necessary to allow the AEBS to function. Replacement power supples are available <https://www.ebay.com/bhp/airport-extreme...>

You can simply use an alternative to it like Belkin Router which have a least number of these problems.
