Ice Maker Stopped Dumping Ice

I have a 2.5 yo Samsung RF261BEAEBC/AA french door refrigerator. The icemaker has suddenly stopped dumping ice. The temperature is set to 2 degrees and the icemaker button is 'On'. When the reset button is pressed, the motor kicks in, the perfectly formed ice drops and the tray refills.

I've replace the water filter and the icemaker module, all to no avail. I've turned everything off, then back on. I'm not sure what to try next. Any help out there?

Miswear - i agree with you. This site is for people with questions about how to repair their appliances. Take your complaints to the manufacturer. We can’t fix your complaints.

I volunteer my time to help others repair their appliances. I’m one of many that give our time to helping others fix stuff, we are not a complaints dept for manufacturers.

I’m tired of reading all these complaints. I’m tired of posting answers to the problems your complaining about that you obviously don’t read. Everyone that has complained how a manufacturer made a crappy refrigerator I have posted answers to why your refrigerator is doing what it’s doing. Most have never even looked for a solution for their problem, they just enjoy complaining.

If you want to fix your refrigerator then click on “question” and ask a question. Don’t add a question in a comment.

Thank you for allowing me this moment to vent.

I hope I didn’t offend anyone, I apologize if I did.

Have a wonderful day!

par

LadyTech, I can relate. I blog at some computer forums. Some people demand answers, and complain when you haven't fixed it for them. I generally tell them that we will gladly refund their money if they aren't satisfied with the volunteer help they are getting.

Of course, they could do what I do to find the answers -- search and search online till you find someone else who had exactly the same situation, and who found out how to fix it. Of course, if everyone knew that, there wouldn't be much mystique to being a geek!

Model #: RF268ABRS. Ice maker replaced 4 times. The control board replaced 3 times. American Home Shield kept sending out the same 2 repair companies. Each time it was replace the ice maker and the control board. I had AHS send out a different company. New guy came. I gave him the history. Pulled the fridge out and removed the bottom cover panel. He said...Well, I see the problem. The compressor was running but the cooling fan was not. He said 'If the compressor is too hot it will not produce ice'. Ordered a new fan and motor. In the mean time he said to leave the fridge pulled out and put a small fan behind it pointing to the compressor. Within 18 hours we had almost a full bin of ice. For 6 days before he came back the ice maker was making ice like crazy. He put the new fan and fan motor in. The next morning the ice bin was full. Two years of grief simply because the untrained technicians would not dig deeper into the repeated problem. It's been running great. We have ample ice. IT'S THE COOLING FAN!!!

par

We too have a Samsung model RF263BEAESR. Our ice maker only works when you use the reset button to get the ice to drop. I've had the icemaker replaced and am still not getting ice automatically. The technician keeps telling me we do not have enough water pressure to fill the ice maker reservoir. We've tested it and have 60 psi from the water line to the refrigerator. The repairman also told me that the way this ice maker works is the water is released via a set time to fill, not how much water is put into the ice maker reservoir (bad design). So, my question is, if your ice maker is working, how many seconds does the water run to fill the ice reservoir? Ours only runs approximately 3.1 seconds, which even at 60psi I don't think is long enough to fill. Any advise is welcome. Thanks.

Thanks to u all 4 posting good valiable info, bless u all

If your having to press the reset every time to get the ice to drop it could be the ice maker sensor. Could also be the temperature isn't cold enough. If everything is cooling fine, I'd replace the ice maker. But, if you've noticed ice cream is softer or the milk taste bad, than your problem isn't in the ice maker.

You can find a bunch of solutions to try on this page: Frigidaire Icemaker Not Working. Most of those fixes apply to Frigidaires as well as many other brands, which tend to work similarly.

Loretta I can hear the ice motor but it won't dump ice in the bucket. I did see frost so I turned off the ice maker for a week and it's not working. Did reset it too..I think this all happened when the kids completely emptied the ice bucket this summer. Any thoughts?

par

Trish, I'm sure the kids had it working hard over the summer. The mineral deposits in our water, or at least where I live, seem to be the cause of more I/M issues than anything else. Including a house full of kids for the summer. :) An easy way to determine if you have hard water is boil a pot of water for 5-10 min. If you notice a white sandy substance in the pan than you do have hard water. It will form a layer of almost cement on the ice trays. It wont allow the trays to flex, thus, damage to the gears or the tray. I'd suggest replacing the water valve also if you have hard water.

par

Mike - I’m assuming that yours is a Samsung with the ice room at the top left of refrigerator. There are sensors. The ice won’t drop untill the temp is 9* or less. Once it reaches 9* a heater comes on to melt the ice a little so it will slide out. If your able to get it to reset and drop ice than we know that the heater and everything else is operating properly except the sensor. What you must do is check the temperature. Those little thermometers that you can buy at the grocery store will not give you an accurate tempature. Buy a tempature tester at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sears etc. I use one that shots a red beam at something and displays its temp. Accurate. You need to know if the room is cold enough for the sensor to send the signal needed to have the heater come on. If the temperature is higher than 9* you might need to clean the condenser coils with a vacuum. Above 9* the ice maker won’t advance.

par

When the temp is 9 degrees or less, A HEATER COMES ON! Sounds like this was designed by the Keystone Cops rather than an HVAC engineer.

The ice maker module was replaced, the temperature was set to 2 degrees, the issue was the button is not an "ice on" button but rather an "ice off" switch. It was illuminated when I checked so after turning it off and waiting about 12 hours, it started making ice again. The person that installed the module did say the switch was off but apparently he didn't wait long enough.

I just read today that they finally found the cause of the on going problem with the ice makers on the french door models. Ice maker in the ice room, top left of refrigerator. Apparently the fix didn't make it to your model before you bought it. Samsung redesigned the dispenser motor assembly. This assembly contains the dispenser motor and the ice fan motor and a few other components. This is located behind the ice maker in the ice room. Samsung said the fan bearings were one of the failures, causing poor air flow, thus, areas in the ice room got warm and ice melted and leaked and stuck together causing all kinds of issues. It would be nice if Samsung decides to replace this as a recall. Hopeful but I won't hold my breath.

Before you buy anything, talk to a technician. We can tell you what brands we work on the most. Sales people know all about selling.

What to check when SAMSUNG I/M DOESN'T MAKE ICE

~Freezer temperature has to be below 9*f

~is the ice tray damaged or covered in frost

~Cycle the I/M Located on the front of the I/M is a test switch. It might be on the side or bottom of the I/M head. Press the button for 5-10 seconds or untill it stars to operate. It should take about 30 or more seconds to complete test and it will end will a fill. If it won’t cycle you have a bad I/M.

~is the water line to I/M frozen? Is there an icycle hanging from the water line to I/M ?

~Test the water valve to the ice maker for continuity/ohms with a multimeter with the refrigerator unplugged. The valve is behind the unit where the water hooks up.

Joel, holding energy saver for 3 sec turns it off or on. Has nothing to do with the ice maker.

par

Tried the energy saver then the ice maker off button. I was desperate. It worked. Thank you Cate.

par

The energy saver controls a low wattage heater that goes around the opening of the doors to prevent condensation from forming. The energy saver has nothing to do with the ice maker.

The Samsung French Door with freezer on the bottom and ice maker in ice room top left of fresh food section. I just learned that there is finally a new fix. Since they came out with this “ice room” design there has been many bulletins, each with a new fix from Samsung. None I have tried worked. Yes, they know there’s a problem and there is already a law suite about this. I understand your frustration. This latest fix isn’t going to make anyone happy either. The redesigned parts that are needed to correct the icing up cost around $600. That doesnt include shipping, labor and tax. The ice maker is redesigned and they fabricated 2 “Y” clips that act as heat sinks to aid in defrosting. The case auger assembly behind the ice bin is also to be replaced. This alone costs $255.00. Yes, it’s not right that you paid all that money on a refer that won’t make ice. As of today, Samsung isn’t picking up any of the costs. Probably because of a pending law suit. Who knows. If it was my refer, no way would I put any money into something that has had half a dozen failed fixes already. I’ve had several customers buy these new countertop ice makers that connect to your sink. Cost $150-$250. They love the ice and it’s an inexpensive solution to your ice crisis.

My Samsung ice maker makes ice but it does not hold it in the top compartment of the icemaker. It just drops it to the freezer section tray therefore I cannot get crushed ice or cubed ice to come out of the door. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can fix this?

RFG 298 SERIES

par

So I've read through all these posts. I have the Samsung french door, freezer on the bottom, ice maker in the fridge top left. What I experience is that there is no ice, so I pull out the ice holder box. What I observe is ice and heavy frost built up on the bottom of the ice maker, and also a big "dam" of frozen ice cubes stuck between the ice maker and the right wall of the ice maker partition. I clean it all out and hit the reset button. Things seem OK for a while (a few weeks maybe, hard to say w/multiple users exactly when it stops working although I have asked family members to tell me when they can't get ice), then the same thing recurs.

Is that enough information to indicate what the problem is?

par

Donna and Kelly Blankenship- There is a class action law suit against Samsung on several models of refrigerators that are having frost and ice building up in the ice room and not allowing the ice to dispense. There are many models involved.

Samsung has tried 5 different solutions for the exact problem you both have. Nothing has been successful. I gave an estimate for Samsung’s latest suggested repair and the parts alone were over $500. I wouldn’t suggest it due to the last 5 suggested repairs failed.

If I was you, I’d try to find out about the class action and how to get Samsung to make good on it. Good luck!

par

Thank you LadyTech for taking the time to educate us, this has all been very informative & has saved me plenty of time & I'm sure money too. Super frustrating but I think I will just pursue a workaround solution.

par

Kellye Blankenship-Your welcome This is frustrating for the consumers and for the technician. It would have been better for everyone if the manufacturer would have admitted from the beginning that they didn’t have a fix for the problem instead of putting us through all this. Good luck.

My ice maker has gone on the blink after many years of service (my fridge is a Whirlpool). In searching around for a replacement, I have found this:

https://www.frigidaire.com/Filters--Acce...

It is a universal ice maker kit which you can install in any freezer that is pre-configured for an ice maker! This one is $114.90. If you go to Amazon.com, you will find other universal ice maker kits.

This is probably the best solution for those unfortunate souls who have a Samsung refrigerator/freezer. Installing a universal ice maker kit will allow you to get something other than a failed Samsung ice maker.

Lady Tech: Do you have any experience with universal ice maker kits?

MrJimPhelps. I have lots of experience with the universal ice makers. They aren’t totally universal. Samsung and LG are too smart for that. You can’t use universal ice makers on Samsung or LG. You have to buy a Samsung. There are rebuilt ice makers available but I strongly don’t recommend it. Go with the new one. A lot of customers are fed up with these ice makers and have bought those countertop ice machines for around $150-$200. There have been pleased with the machines. I was pretty impressed with them as well.

If you have perfectly formed Ice which dumps in the tray when you press the reset button, but otherwise nothing comes out? It’s likely the IR sensors which check to see if the ice bucket is full may be bad. The way you test it on my Samsung fridge (RF25HMEDB) is Press and hold the freezer and frigde buttons on the panel. They are the top two on the unit. After 6 seconds the panel will flash all icons. Then quickly press the lighting button which will put the panel in load condition display mode. The LCDs for the Tempature numbers will light up and each segment of the LCD represents a sensor. The bottom horizontal segment on the 3rd digit display (or what would be the tens place on the Fridge temp) represents the Ice bucket status, if the segment is flashing, the fridge thinks the bucket is full. If its solid, it thinks the bucket is empty enough to keep filling. Unfortunately there is not much on line about replacing the sensors other than the fact that it is possible and the IR Beam Break sensors can be bought for between $3->$12 on Amazon

The engineer is coming to replace the ice box on my Samsung french door fridge freezer but says the appliance needs to turned off for 48 hours is this right?

I recently purchased a used Samsung French door and the ice maker makes ice but will not dispense out of the door. The auger will not rotate. The hatch that opens on the door when you push the dispenser opens up, but the auger won't move and the hatch in the ice tray does not open. When I push the reset button nothing happens. It can't be a freezing problem because the unit was unplugged for several days. Even when the ice maker is completely empty the auger still won't move. Please help!

par

Lady tech, I don't have problem with the ice maker, my is making ice ok but the problem is it just does not dispense the ice. The ice would be stuck in "The tunnel" of the door. The flap would not open to drop the ice. My samsung fridge model is RF4287HA. Do you have an advice for me how to fix the flap to open to release the ice? Thanks

par

I have (had) a faulty IR sensor. The transmitter is in the auger unit, which is fine. The reciver in the ice maker that went bad. The IR receiver wasn't sealed properly. The mositure got in and cause corrosion which broke a trace. Bridged it and the "ICE full" condition went away. Making ice again.

Samsung should have that one-dollar parts sealed well. It is in a dampped environment. Or, at less sale the part for repair rather have us buying a $100 ice maker for that.

the samsung ice makers are the worse on the market. they know they have problems , yet fail to address the defects in the design. i have for the last 6 months had to defrost my ice-maker like we did 40 years ago with freezers……. i have had the worst experience with this company and ice maker

as of sept 19,2018 …..i had a service man come out from the company samsung recomends from my area which is video repair place….. long story, but i had to pay them up front for the service call , repairman says if i dont get a new icemaker it will happen all over again because of a design defect……. he preceeds to show me….. so i tell him to replace it…. as he is setting it on the counter , he tells me their is another service charge…… i hit the ceiling…. i have already paid one…… sooooo i call the company and they tell me that’s their policy…… when he leaves to get the part, it’s another service charge….. i told her he walked 20 steps or so to his truck and got it …… she then tells me, he left your house , so it’s another service charge…. i argue with her over their shady practice….but got no where………… so not only has samsung taken advantage of us knowing of the defect, but the company that represents them does toooooooo…..what a racket…….

i also, am in the service business and woild never treat people the way we, have been treated over an ice maker……

after telling my story just this morning , i have had 3 people that have samsung refrigerators , where theit ice makers dont work…… shame on you

If anyone reads this my ice maker stopped working months ago I tried everything so I called refrigerator repairman out charged me $307 for a new ice maker. Well that didn't work he told me I needed a new board which was another $300. I said no way come back and pick this up and we will just buy ice. We decided to look at the power on and off button on the refrigerator come to figure out that the light was not Illuminating and this whole time it was because it was off. So before you do anything hold it down and see if it works even though the light does not

I can confirm as the same thing happened to me. Somehow the "ICE OFF" button was pressed but the "ICE OFF" icon did not light up so it was "OFF" but there was zero indication. Definitely try this 1st. If you hold the ICE button for 3 sec and you hear a rising chime sound but the light doesn't come on then this could be the issue. Just hold it until the chime sounds in a lowering tone and that would mean it's ready to make ice. I know that sounds confusing but try turning on and off the "CHILD LOCK" so you can hear the sound it makes when you turn it "ON" and "OFF". It's the same tone for the ice maker button when you turn it "OFF" or "ON". The other thing is you have to wait a while for it to work as Samsung has some type of delay built in (I think to make sure the freezer is cold enough) before dispensing ice. I believe the actual delay is 12hrs but it could be as much as 24. Good luck.

par

This is what Samsung said (on their site):

" Child Lock and Dispenser Lock also help prevent you from dispensing water or ice. If you try to use the panel and see the lock icon is lit, or if the panel only responds with a chime, it means the panel needs to be unlocked."

par

So here is a little help to all !! For some reason Samsung has the light for ice when illuminated means it off!! if you look closely it says OFF

Another potential problem is if your water pressure falls too low. Usually this is from a filter that needs to be replaced or perhaps mineral deposits. To test if it is your filter, take it out and then hit the reset button. If that doesn’t do it, unplug your fridge or turn off the circuit breaker for 2 min. When you power it back on, try the reset button again. This solved the problem for me. Time to get a new filter!

I turned my ice maker off for three days, let the blockage in the pipes melt, turned it back on and it worked on again. Very happy I didn't have to spend any money.

I have already spent the total value of the fridge freezer already in other repairs. My fridge started cooking my food, instead of being 4 degrees it went to 26 degrees!

I wouldn't purchase another Samsung fridge again.

Nelanie Tompkins - Does your refrigerator have the french doors with freezer on bottom and the ice maker located top left corner? If the tech replaced all those parts then check the temperature? Has ice cream been soft or milk spoiling too soon? Also, pull the ice bucket out and look in the back of ice room, do you see frost or ice built up in the very back? Do you have water under the crisper drawers? When was the last time the coils behind the unit were cleaned? If they haven't been cleaned in a year, that is probably your problem. Dirty coils will cause the compressor to overheat, thus, not cool properly. The coils should be cleaned once a year-more if you have indoor pets.

All ice makers have a temperature sensor. They will not drop the ice into the ice bin until the temperature sensor detects a set temperature. The model with the ice room in the top left has its own Freon gas line looped in it. Do not attempt to pry the ice maker out.

par

Technician cleaned the coils temperature does not change its a constant 0 I bought a thermometer and put in it. The tech is confused I'm confused I just want my ice to work again

par

Different problem: ice maker button is locked. how to unlock? I press it on and it does nothing except shows the lock.

par

Child Lock is activated probably. If your buttons are like mine - on the front panel above the ice/water dispenser, press and hold the bottom right button for 3 seconds. It will release the Child Lock. It's written (albeit in dim, weak lettering) on the button panel too. Child Lock prevents inquisitive kids from dispensing ice or water without a cup present & only pressing the paddle. The funny part is that many kids can figure out pretty quick how to clear it making CL a weak effort in the end.

The Samsung ice maker is the worst of all fridge ice makers. I’ve had two..shame on me for buying a second time. The salesperson told me the ice maker was greatly improved...not true. I’ve discovered that you have to remove the ice tray/box every 45 days... .put a hairdryer in the cavity to de-ice everything...for about 10 minutes...put a towel under the hair dryer....when it’s de-iced...put the draw back and wait for ice. It will take 12 hours to get the ice going again.

I usually do this at night and let the ice regenerate over night. Make sure the ice tray/box is empty of old ice and dry.... or it will leak water....before you get ice or cause another freeze up

This worked for me too. I used a heat gun instead of a hairdryer, but the result is the same. I think the water inlet line freezes and needs to be thawed out. Anyway, before spending all kinds of $$$ to get it repaired, it's a good thing to try. If it works: you've just saved big bucks - if not, you've lost nothing.

Check the lever arm to ensure it is not frozen to the side of the ice maker. It is on the left side of the ice maker and is a white arm. During filling, if the refill tube is not perfectly straight, some water may splash on the arm and it will freeze to the side of the maker. If this happens, it thinks the tray is full of ice and will not cycle wither because it is stuck and/or senses the tray is full. Be careful and check to ensure you do not break the arm.
