New harddrive installed but need to install new osx with no cds

I'm having a new solid state drive installed in my iMac (late 2010 model). They want to charge $70 to install the OS and I know I should be able to do that myself. I purchased the machine from someone and wasn't given any cds for the OS or anything. Is it possible to install the OS on my iMac without them and, if so, how?

Did they mention how they are taking care of the run away fan issue?

You will also need disk utilities to format the drive. Is your old drive still working?

The guy from Microcenter recommended a drive that wasn't solid state (it needed an additional, more expensive, cable to fuction properly and he recommended the next best drive where the fan shouldn't be an issue.

Can I get the disk utilities online? The old drive was still working, just really slow.

What drive did he recommend?

I changed your icon to what may be your machine. You didn't list a size.

You can get a disk image download from the mac site. Here is link that may help. Click or tap on the blue link. I have also included the phone number for Apple. They were very helpful and free. They helped me with a 7 year old computer. I had the exact same situation. Good luck.

If you don't have a bootable drive to run the installer you'll need to buy the older OS CD Mountain Lion.

@danj I believe the is just a download not a disk. It also has this requirement:

Your Mac needs:

OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed

2 GB or more of memory

8 GB or more of available space

par

@danj Same issue, it did not ship as a disk, that's a download. The last Disk that actually shipped as a disk was 10.6.3

System Requirements

An Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, Core i5, Core i7 or Xeon processor

Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

7 GB free hard drive space

2 GB RAM

par

Well, at one time it was a shippable product ;-{

par

@danj I don't think so. I looked on eBay and all I see are knock off (home made) installation disks. If Apple sold it there should be boxed sets and documentation. Besides I bought it from Apple thinking it was an install DVD and all i got was a download link.

Here's how to change the drive on a 21" 2010:

Remplacement du SSD dans l'iMac Intel 21,5" EMC 2389 EMC 2428

Get a USB to SATA adapter,Universal Drive Adapter

Hook up the old drive externally and boot from it.

Go to Disk Utilities and format the new drive.

If you've ever done a system upgrade the installer should be in your applications folder.

Run it on the new drive, then you can update or upgrade to the latest system via download from the App store.

Now we need to address possible fan issues according to the drive you plan on installing. This will give you an idea:

I had issues on the phone with Apple (they were great, but we couldn't get things figured out on the phone), but I took it into the store and they installed the OS within 30 minutes. They really are geniuses.

@luvbooks - Emily, You download the OS installer and create a bootable USB thumb drive so you have a backup drive. Don't forget to download the OS installer over the the USB drive as well. Happy it all worked out!
