Hello, I have got question for ifixit community!
I had replaced a display on iPhone 7 plus for my customer. Everything works fine, but home button not. Touch Id works properly but home button clicks only on finger on. For example; I can't make double-tap for one hand control, because only on touch it clicks.
Had anyone this problem? Some reasons?

Hey Guys
Time for facts.. As no one commented on my post above, I talked to my (highly skilled) SMD repair connection, and it turend out, that he knew both the issue, and the cure.
This annoying "double click" is caused by a damaged BGA soldering, on one of the small components on the HB flex, and arise when forcing the HB flex off the screen frame to fast, and without heat. Adjusting the screw as suggested elsewhere in this thread, will just arc the flexcable in slightly different positions, and thus the loose component might (in some cases), achieve connections required to function properly. In other cases (mine), not so much.
The correct repair, is to re-solder the HB Flex componment.
To avoid this in the future, heat the glass just right of the HB, to abt 60-70 degree celcius, and use something very thin, to slowly pry off the flexcable towards the HB key. I did it like this from day one, and haven't had this problem once. DO NOT heat up the HB key it self.. I am sure it will "break" somehow, and render your (or your customers) i7 useless.

Sorry Kyle, I was away on holiday, and thus didn't see your question before now, and I'm afraid that theres no universal answer to that question. It depends on wich flex cable track got torn, or bent one to many times, or wich component lost a "BGA solder connection".. The HB flex is much more fragile, than one could be lead to believe. In this case, I think it was multiple tracks in the flex it self, and also one of the components. BTW, the same phone came back after a short while, bootlooping (Apple logo,, on/off), and had to have more HB Flex tracks repaired. I did not do these repairs, my very skilled micro-soldering-SMD-repair guy did. (External service)
And sorry btw, that this "solution", is more like a "explanation".. There's no universal fix or cure for this, or any of the other i7 / i8-HB related issues, unless you find someone with knowledge, experience, and a microscope. That THISrepair succeeded was "a miracle" and TO many hours work (he was abt to give up several times).
This construction has branded i7 and i8 "Generally a bad phone-choice" in my eyes, and I recommend my customers NOT to buy them. I changed hundreds and hundreds of HB-keys, and Switches on the previous iPhone models, but for all the owners of these models, this issue will now mean an expensive "Apple-swap", or scrapping the phone.
I am sort of new to repairs so I was just wondering couldn't I just buy a new home button or flex cable before I get into soldering ?
Sorry Hughes..! I missed your question/comment.. Buying one of ebay or another site just "fill's the hole".. Nothing else! The original HB flex has an encoder IC on it, which pairs with a decoder IC on the logic board.. Only the factory paired HB-IC can pair with the logic-board.. if no pairing is made during boot, the button wont work, as either "Fingerprint ID", or "click function". However, theres here's a "sort of workaround" for this issue now, with a set of a modified charge-flex, and a modified HB key.. Dunno if it was REWA, or some other Chinese company who sold it. It just brings back the "click function".. not the touch ID, and it also kill's the headphone through lightning port function.. And, it's supposed to support fast charge..! I have not tried it.. yet!

Readjust the screw right underneath the button, careful not to make it too loose or the button may leak water.
On a second thought, maybe you are not aiming for water resistance anyway, so just normal tightness and not too tight to break it, not too loose so it may come off and end you up with a dead forever button.

You mean put screw directly in home button without metal bracket?
No, adjust its tightness.

But thanks for your help :) Home button doesnt work normally outside of phone too.. I dont know what this can be.. Without bracket, with bracket, inside, outside, nothing works... Home button is too sensitive. I only put finger on it, and it clicks 2-times or more.. Not like on normal iphone 7, when I put finger on home button, it doesnt make anything..
I have the same problem, it has been after water damage
There are 4 screws holding the bracket. Could it be the center one is too tight??? Or maybe any of the others???? I do not think it is connector.

I have exactly the same problem I am going to approach the central screw tension in the underside of the Touch I/D sensor securing plate as a first step.

There does not seem to be a definite answer to this problem I finished up dismantling the Home button on the clients phone and re-assembling it extremely carefully, to my amazement the home button took a harder press for activation, the over sensitivity problem had gone so I an still in a quandary why the situation occurred in the first instance.
Here's to the next iPhone 7 repair.

There is no 100% solution for this. I have't got own photo of it, but I think, that @kasperfix4u is right. It can be some chip on HB flex but on the other side it could be pressure sensor on touch id too. I think, that some layers in pressure sensor comes closer and HB needs lower pressure for "click". But I can't say that it is for sure.
I think that it is unrepairable. btw @costadelsol : Best solution for this is SWAP.. I think.. I have a friend with profi microSoldering skills, so I could bring him this home button and ask him for checking it.
I don't need to keep water-resistance.. But I check home button outside of display and it doesnt respond pressure I think.. Can I damaged pressure sensor?

Try below steps..
Choose the click that’s right for you.
On iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, go to Settings > General > Home Button, then choose a click.
Change 3D Touch sensitivity.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > 3D Touch, then set 3D Touch sensitivity to Light, Medium, or Firm.

No, it is not SW issue, this problem is caused by home button damage during screen replacement :(
Thks Patricia Jackson your solution was the best of the lot in this thread (IMO) it makes perfect sense as the logical first step while determining whether the issue is simply a settings issue and easily corrected, or is it a hardware issue requiring a more difficult tearing down of the phone again, which each time increases the risk of potentially causing additional, different, or worse problems then someone may have had to begin with. After reading through the entire thread and deciding my best option I chose yours first and my home button is now operating as it had when the phone was new and I didn’t have to hassle with those tiny screws again or worry about was I putting them in the correct place or tightening them too much or not enough... so thanks again your logical response has saved my day
Not really even close to the most logical solution in most of these peoples cases. They never changed their settings during the process of replacing the screen. So that’s a logical solution in a thread maybe about resetting phone or tweeking out and meth ing with settings randomly. But the reason for the home button not having consistency with pressure is simply because it is broken and most of us cannot fix this issue unless they are are skilled with micro soldering. The answer was answered years ago here

I think the small component that is suspect is that silver rectangle chip on the home button itself. It is held onto the flex with BGA solder balls which consists of a grid of solder balls (5x5)
Some of those balls can become loose due to flexing of the ribbon cable right under that chip.
That chip is called the Turtle IC. It has quite some underfill around that chip so most experienced micro-solderers have fixtures to hold them firmly in place to remove the underfill and fix the connections under the chip.

sorry to tell you during replacing lcd you have damaged home button ic from right side of the corner if you have microscope please check and replace it with original ic it will definitely work

I had this problem after taking my phone into the shower with me. I’m not sure if it was the water that caused it though but I was able to eventually fix it. Suspecting that the back plate from the sensor was causing the issue, I used a suction cup and pulled the bottom screen up, without pulling the screen off. When I turned my phone back on afterwards the home button worked normally. Hope this helps.

Hi,
I got the same issue and I tried to clean the HB from outside with contact cleaning agent and then heated it up for a few seconds.
Mine works fine now.

I found the same problem in my iphone 7.opened up the screen and found traces of water on HB. the HB is welded to a shield. I think thats the water which makes the sensor sooo fast. Does anyone knows if we can remove that shield and check if the HB is water damaged and remove that water flux from there and make the HB back to life???

With water damage, I have found that you can usually get the home button to work again by upping the resistance of the circuit responsible for sensing capacitive touch.

The short answer is that the two most common reasons touch on the home button becomes too sensitive are that the cable has ripped, or there is liquid damage to the home button.
If the cable is ripped, you can try to “fix” the traces, but they are ridiculously small. If it has water damage, you can modify the resistors. (I wrote a blog post explaining in more about how to fix these issues in more detail. See link below)

The cable usually gets ripped when you tighten the screw for the home button flex grounding plate (see image)

i think mine got water damage when me and my buddies were ding dong ditching because we went through a creek and when i got home it was rapid clicking. it only does it intermittantly so should i take it apart and try it off or just deal w it?

I have had this issue with only 2 phones (of probably 100), one I repaired and one I purchased knowing there was a home button issue.
The phone I repaired: put a second new screen in and the problem was resolved (which made me confident to buy the second phone)
The phone I purchased… Still having issues. I have connected and reconnected the HB and it will either be too sensitive or not sensitive enough.
There are most definitely several possible issues with these.

Hello, I think that too, but I only switch 2 original displays. (Only Home buttons) and their bracket (I check if bracket is in correct position)

@tomchai is correct for the most reasonable solution. I only say that because I have come across this. If you press on the home button and it clicks like a 6s then its the bracket underneath the home button. It needs to be inspected and see if it needs tightening.

This is NOT a solution, just adding my experiences!
I got a my first "freaky Home button" today, and no adjustment of the screw (the one in the HB itself) would cure, or even reduce the crazy random activation of the "click".
Neither did bending the bracket in various directions, or anything else.. It did however, seem to help a little bit, to wipe off the grease off the key, but after 5-8 "clicking's", it freaks out again..
It's a temporary error.. sometimes, especially with the screen off the frame, it seems to behave slightly better.
According to the customer, the problem first occurred after another shop put on a copy.. and they also pinched the flex cable but screen still worked.
The LCD assembly which is on now, is an original refurb.. I fiddled around with this abt an hour now, and begin to worry abt the health of the screen flex cables, so any suggestions would be appreciated !
PS: I don't see how one could flip the HB bracket.. is it even possible?

Agreed the HB securing plate will not assemble in flip mode.
