DIY RAM Upgrading and the T2 chip

If I purchase 3rd party RAM upgrade for this Late 2018 MacMini, and install it myself, will that run afoul of the T2 chip? I usually upgrade via OWC for myself and my clients. I am trying to clear the air for the 480 readers of my daily newsletter.

The T2 chip does not have any bearing with RAM only storage (flash in this case).

You should be OK doing so. I believe the T2 chip only time bombs major stuff like the logic board. Lots of people are having luck with the guide created to replace the RAM so I foresee no problems here.

correct - the reason Apple soldered that SSD to motherboard - as if there would be T2 + possibility to to upgrade via M.2 - that would..... NOT work with any SSD - would p*ss off many people

Bart - The storage in this case is raw flash! Not a finished SSD module (M.2 or Apple custom).

The T2 is the controller to the flash chips. Unlike a SSD drive the T2 uses some tricks by interleaving the write operation across the chips cells so the delay is reduced. The T2 also uses a similar approach across the chips (RAID like). A M.2 or custom Apple SSD using in the older systems don't offer as fast data transfer. If you where to RAID two SSD's you would introduce the added processing delay, if you had four SSD's in a RAID the delay of the extra 3 controllers introduce quite along of delay.

The last issue is the deep encryption the T2 offers and the added protection scheme of Find My iPhone present on the system a stolen Mac with a T2 is worthless like an iPhone!. Having removable drive would interfere with this.

I do agree it would have been nice to offer a PCIe/NVMe blade SSD drive but I do wonder if there is enough space given the need for better cooling. But even though it would have been nice I don't see the lacking of it is a killer given the number of USB-C ports the system has and most people would want deeper & faster storage than a single 2 or 4 TB of SSD. Here a Pro would want a RAID setup with both standard HDD's as well as SSD's.

After replacing the RAM, I won’t be able to upgrade Big Sur. However, the upgrade could be done after insert the old Ram. Is that related to T2 ?
