Why is my tablet not working with my earphones?

I have a Samsung  galaxy tab3 lite and when I plug my earphones in it comes out through the speakers for some reason and usually the earphones I have works with my tablet. I have tried to reset my tablet and no changes.

On my tab, once I plugged in my earphones, I receive a notification on my tablet that its been connected but it actually doesn't. I tried connecting those earphones to another device to see if it works, it did. I tried connecting another earphone to my device and it worked. So what really is it with my tablet and the earphones in question?

Hi @gamergrlashley ,

Does the headphone icon appear on the display when you plug in the headphones?

If not it may be that the headphone jack is either loose from the systemboard or is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Here’s a link to the Remplacement de la carte mère du Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite guide.

It is helpful as it shows how to open the tablet to gain access to the headphone socket.

Not quite sure but I think that the socket is an SMD type component (surface mounted device) mounted on the systemboard, so you’ll need SMD tools and expertise to carry out the repair.

If this seems too daunting, contact a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service and ask for a quote to repair the tablet.

This has happened before I think. It did used to show the headphone symbol at the top.

Hi @gamergrlashley ,

Inside the earphone socket there is a contact that operates when the earphone plug is inserted to indicate to the audio controller in the tablet that the audio needs to be switched away from the speakers and to the earphones.

Since the icon is no longer appearing there may be a problem with the contact or the socket is disconnected from the systemboard.

If the contact is faulty the socket cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced.

If the socket is disconnected from the systemboard this can be repaired by SMD soldering it back on.

I won't be able to get it fixed unfortunately until I'm able to get a new tablet. Would like Bluetooth earbuds work with it since it's not actually connected?

Hi @gamergrlashley ,

It should work as the tablet only can't recognize when the earphones have been plugged in. Connecting via BT is a different process not involving the earphone socket.

You have nothing to lose by trying it ;-)

ok so today I got some Bluetooth earphones and they really work with my tablet, it was confusing though, but I got it.

Hi @funmifunmi ,

Does the audio cut out from the main speakers when the headphones are plugged in?

Have these earphones worked OK with this tablet before or never worked with this tablet?

With the earphones plugged in, try very gently (stress very gently) moving the plug up and down or from side to side an listen if you get audio coming and going or if it is there with the plug held in a certain position.

What can happen is the earphone socket has springs that come into contact with the rings on the earphone plug and if these springs have lost a bit of tension or if the plug has a slightly smaller (and I mean slight) diameter then the connection is not established.

The earphone plug may work in another socket due to it maybe having more tensioned spring contacts and another plug may work in the tablet socket due to the plug having a slightly larger diameter.

It might seem strange but not all plugs are exactly the same size e.g. some say that they are 3.5mm and others say 1/8th inch but 3.5mm = 0.137 inches and not 0.125 inches (or 1/8th in = 3.175 mm).

As you can see not much difference but maybe enough.

The only way to overcome this is to change the socket and see if that works any better
