swap out 500gb ssd blade and replace with crucial 2tb ssd

hey wassup guys,

i bought a 2tb ssd bundle kit from ifixit. im wondering if its possible to just remove everything from inside the computer. take the ssd blade off the back of the logic board. run the sata data/power cable to my 2tb ssd which i cloned my operating system to, and mount it in the hard drive bracket once its all put back together. sorry if this question has been asked before.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thank you for your time!

Please tell me the specific storage configuration you have now and exactly what you are trying to achieve with an upgrade.

Remplacement du SSD de l'iMac 27" Retina 5K

i ordered the sata data/power cable for my model imac as well. but definitely want to get some advice on this before doing it. i forgot i got my imac with the ssd blade, i thought it was just going to be a simple hard drive swap.

Your blade SSD is using a PCIe/NVMe connection which is not compatable with your SATA SSD drive you bought. I would leave the blade SSD alone and make it your boot drive and use your 2.5" SSD as your data drive. You want to only have your OS & apps on the blade SSD, leave at least 1/4 of the drive free.

That Apple blade on the back of your logic board is the fastest data mover you will ever get on this machine. If it is a 500 GB that’s fantastic.

Now, please clarify your exact storage configuration. You have the blade. Is there also a hard drive?

This is how your machine shipped:

Standard Storage:2 TB (Fusion)Std. Storage Speed:N/A

Details:This model has a 2 TB "Fusion" Drive, which combines a 128 GB SSD and a 2 TB hard drive. It has a Serial ATA (6 Gb/s) connector for a 2.5" hard drive and a PCIe connector for the SSD.

At the time of purchase, Apple also offered a 3 TB "Fusion" Drive (128 GB SSD and 3 TB hard drive) for an extra US$100 or a 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB SSD for an extra US$200, US$600, and US$1400, respectively.

Standard RAM:8 GBMaximum RAM:64 GB*

Details:*By default, 8 GB of RAM is installed as two 4 GB memory modules (and two slots are unoccupied). Apple offered this model custom configured with 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB for an extra US$200, US$600, or US$1400, respectively. However, upgrading the RAM yourself is quick and easy.

Bed time, I will look at this in the morning.

What country are you in? Was this a BTO (built to order machine)? I am not seeing in Everymacs description where it shipped with just the blade. But it does state that there are connections for a 2.5" drive.

im in the united states and i live in hawaii and thats where it was shipped to. so youre saying i could install the 2tb ssd and use that as a internal drive? but you suggest i leave the blade in and keep the operating system on there and just use the 2tb ssd for data?
