I cannot get my laptop to boot up.

I cannot get my laptop to boot up. it's giving me an option to reset the PC letting me keep or remove any files. I tried resetting the PC keeping my files. but then it says there was a problem resetting the PC and no changes were made and goes back to a blue screen with 4 options. I'm not sure of all it's specs. Says windows 8. Model 15 Ro15d. It's about 7 years old and has a lot of pictures and video I need to get off of it. Thank you

Hi,,

Could you please verify the model number of the laptop as the number you have posted is not showing any results?

There should be a label on the laptop at the back or underneath that has the model information.

Also if the HDD is easily accessible, remove it from the laptop and install it in a desktop PC as a secondary drive and then check if you can access the files you want etc.

If the HDD is not that easy to access, with the correct laptop model number you should be able to find the HP hardware maintenance manual online which would show how to remove the HDD.

Just search for HP (insert full model number) support and then find the hmm link on the support page for the laptop.

If this works at least you have your data and then you can work on getting the laptop operating.

I appreciate your answer. I will look into this. I can do a few things in terms of computer repairs but if not I'll have to take it in for repair. Thank you.

Startup Repair to fix boot problems with Windows 8".

What are the 4 options on the blue screen?

You want to get to “Advanced Options” and select “Startup Repair”

Actually I've tried that. I hit startup repair but it said there was a problem and it couldn't do it so It went back to the original four options.

Did it say what the problem was?

It didn't. Just went back to the 4 options.

The other thing is changing setting in the BIOS/UEFI bewteen UEFI and Legacy Mode for the boot drive.

Getting back to Startup Repair I have experience of doing the startup repair 4 or 5 times in a row before it was fixed. Presumably a little bit is fixed each time until it is completed.

You can aslo get to the drive and see if files are still there by using "Command Prompt" in the Advanced Option screen. Then you will know if your data is still there.

Do you have access to another windows computer and a USB flash drive you can format?

It sounds like windows either needs to be reinstalled or hard drive is dying.

I recommend making a Linux Live USB to copy the information off the hard drive on the laptop.

Guide on how to do so here:

https://www.online-tech-tips.com/compute...

Then after backup is done try reinstalling

windows with the windows media creation tool, if you google that Microsoft will have a webpage where you can download it and a guide as well.

If reinstall does not work the hard drive is most likely faulty and needs to be replaced. If it does I recommend replacing with an SSD, either 240 or 480GB usually fine it'll speed up the system alot and do not have mechanical failures like HDD does.
