Microphone does not work during call on ear.

Hi, I dropped my phone in water 4 days ago (19/3). I’ve let the phone (Huawei P10) dry for a couple of days before I charged it and open it. However, I’ve noticed one problem after the incident. The microphone doesn’t seem to work. I’ve done some tests, and the microphone works when recording audio and when making a call on the speaker, but not when doing a normal call (the phone to the ear). I’ve tried different things to try to fix it:

  1. restarted the phone
  2. unactivated the “OK Google” function
  3. restore the phone to factory settings

But nothing works. I've also opened the cover to see if it’s dry. Does anyone know if there are two microphone or how does it work? And I’m guessing it’s a hardware problem (if you don’t have other suggestions), does anyone know if it is possible to change the microphone /microphone board?

As you know water, and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

The corrosion is ongoing and doesn’t stop until it has been cleaned away.

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents or other additives and is not as effective. If you do use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Huawei P10 repair guides which may be of some help.

The microphone is mounted on the USB charge board. If it is determined that the microphone itself is faulty, replacement parts are available online. Just search for Huawei P10 USB charging dock mic board to get results for suppliers of the part.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Thank you so much for the information. I did turn off the phone right after the incident but unfortunately, I didn't clean it, I only left it to dry.

I found the mic, and as you said it was on the same board as the USB. I tried to clean it but no luck. So I bought the USB charge board and managed to change it. So my phone is functional again.
