Phone Refuses to boot

Block Image

I have a HTC Droid Eris that I bought from Anchorage, Alaska. As I recieved it, I plugged it in (to charge) and left it overnight, as I do any phone I have recently bought.

When I went to turn it on, the phone goes into the bootloader (or whatever screen is in the picture).

I want to clarify that the WDIs (Water Damage Indicators) are cherry red, as I assume it has seen snow from being out of alaska.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi @flakierepairs ,

As you have said, the WDI indicators are saying that they got wet, so you may have to open it up and check what damage has occurred.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone’s operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it has been properly cleaned away.

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion. If possible, do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain additives which may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the % of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the boards.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit HTC Droid Eris guide(s) which may be of some help.

Thanks for the help. The Phone booted, but has recently shown more signs of damage. I plan on doing the steps you have listed and repairing it
