How to connect battery daughter board ribbon after replacing battery.

I replace my battery (2017 MacBook pro 13") and can't connect the daughter board ribbon cable. I ordered a new cable and it doesn't work either. Suggestions?

Hi Steven,

Can you post some pictures of where the cable is supposed to connect to the motherboard?

What exactly do you mean when you say you can't connect it? Is it that it won't go into the connector, or doesn't fit, or there's no connector where it's supposed to be, etc.?

@michaelsounds1 - The fan end needs to be connected first as the cable flips over (bad design). Here's an image of the cable and as you can see the cable enters from the left not right side of the connector, are you trying to insert it backwards?

DanJ - thanks - very helpful. Yah - it is a bad design. I remembered that the cable comes in from the fan side, I was just having trouble getting it into that tiny slot. It would be helpful for iFixit to include a pic showing the detail above - or maybe even include the seated cable in the kit. After looking through the forum a bit, it appears that this part of reassembly was a pain for quite a few folks. Thanks, again.

Review Step 11 in this guide Remplacement de la batterie du MacBook Pro 13" avec touches de fonction 2017 note how the ZIF connector latch needs to be up and then carefully folded down to compress the ribbon cable.

Did the latch come off so you can’t compress the cable? Or did you pull the entire connector off the battery or logic board? It doesn’t take much to pull it off.

Will it break the connection point if you rip it out without the locks because i followed a youtube guide and did that and now the cables wont work for both new and old battery and i dont want to have ruined my logic board :(

Or will it mess up the cable itself?

@chris58711 - The ZIF connector is a compression type, so if you pull on the cable like removing a letter from an envelope sliding it out normally it will just slide out. But just like an envelope glue or pulling to the side can stop it clearing and clearly pulling on it too hard can make things worse!

Of course, a closed latch won’t allow the ribbon cable enough space to enter, so you do need to release the compression by carefully lifting the latch tab.

Of course you need the largest Crowbar you can find - NO this only needs a small feather quill to lift so go easy here! And don’t over extend the lift as the latch can snap out and go flying across your desk and onto the floor!

If the connector comes fully off or is damaged that will require replacing which then gets complicated and costly! Here you will need someone with the deeper skills and tools to replace the connector and my require patching as the solder pads can become damaged.

The cable is not hard to replace the end that gets taken loose to replace the battery. The battery I bought off ebay that was a genuine Apple replacement battery didn’t have a cable on the new battery. The small end is a real b___h to replace and I am still working on mine. Spent more time on this piece of crap that the entire rest of the battery replacement. My debate noe is whether to buy another Apple product. Good Luck!!

@jonsie - Sorry to tell you what you bought on eBay is not a genuine Apple battery. Apple never offered their batteries for sale unless it was via a repair at an authorized services center or Apple Store.

eBay sells more genuine Apple batteries than Apple does! They didn’t say it was new…. ;]

@bigbeesack - Sorry not even close! Unless you bought it directly from Apple via one of their Apple Stores or authorized Apple service dept as part of a repair, every other Battery is 100% 3rd Party! So while some remanufacture old batteries by either replacing a dead cell or just salvaging the BMC logic, it's just easier to make anew!

I'm having trouble re-inserting the small end of the cable (near the fan). It keeps trying to fold when I try to push it in. How do I grab the cable securely enough to mate the connectors, but without crimping the cable or connector?

@michaelsounds1 - These are ZIF connectors are designed to require ultra low pressure to insert! The root issue here is the failure of releasing the compression latch when removing the ribbon cable or the latch was allowed to close without the ribbon inserted, hence blocking the path for the ribbon to be inserted.. Carefully review Steps 10 ~ 12 in this guide Remplacement de la batterie du MacBook Pro 13" avec touches de fonction 2017 as an example the latch it's self also requires very little force to move so don't over do it as the small plastic part can easily snap out flying! Likely never to be found.

In your case the latch is blocking the pathway or the ribbon cable is damaged so it's not cleanly inserting (wrinkled) at which point you'll likely need to replace it.

It's the other end of that ribbon cable that I am having trouble re-attaching. The instructions only say "you may need to completely remove and transfer this cable ... disconnect both ends". The end near the fan doe have a latch, which means there is a tiny slot that's just difficult to see. Once the ribbon cable is seated, how much of the contacts on the cable (if any) should be visible?
