Internal Storage not Detecting Full Capacity

The title sums up the issue. I dragged my old Macbook out of storage, tried to boot it up and it didn't detect an OS. I figured it would be an easy fix, booted it into recovery mode, and went to reinstall OS-X. The installer did not detect a drive that it could install to so I went into Disk Utility from recovery mode and disk0 with Mac OS X Base System is listed, with only 1.19 GB total storage. Clicking "Erase" does not let me do anything, nor do "First Aid" or "Restore". Mostly wondering if I can fix this somehow or if the drive is probably dead.

Replacement drives for this model have dropped in prices. I'd drop a new one in, here's how to do it:

Are there any other possible solutions? I don't really want to spend the money on a drive if I can avoid it, as I don't really care about the laptop to begin with.

If it were in my shop, I would hook it up first to an external drive with an appropriate operating system installed using a USB adapter and see if it boots. But I don't know what you have available.

The laptop does boot Linux Mint and Arch Linux, but I can't install them since they don't recognize a storage device to install to.

Your facing a file system mis-match! The recovery is based on the older HFS+ where as the drive has been upgraded to High Sierra or newer which then converts to APFS.

You’ll need to create a bootable OS installer which is running a newer macOS to then run Disk Utility and you may need to re-install the OS as well.
