Can I replace ssd from my iMac 2015s into 2017s?

basically trying to get new imac and it could be either one of 2017 or 2018 both as second hand, and i wanted to know if its gonna be ok if i eject my pcie 1tb ssd card and 2.5” sata hooked ssd from 2015 and port it at newer imac im planning to get.

not sure if 17’ or 18’ has got sata connection inside but would be good to know that too. i know physically its not a worry but had wondered software wise since the way im thinking this is to bring back all my files and set ups as it is. 2015 has got monterey os installed in pcie ssd card and i couldnt be sure if it would make any issue doing so. and kinda scared cuz i cant lose my datas lol

anyways, thx in advance!

The 2020 doesn’t offer the option to alter the internal drives. The single drive is soldered except the top model and only a blade SSD.

What is your current drive set? A Fusion Drive or did you break the set into discrete drives.

current set you mean 2015 that ive got? it used to be just a 1tb hdd stocked no fusion option but i gave it 1tb blade ssd at its empty pcie slot and replaced out 3.5” hdd into 2.5” ssd(512gb). so ok, 20’s are soldered into board so couldnt be done replacing but others can.

what about 2.5” ssd? do they not have sata at all if fusion drive wasnt the option to begin with or what?? that would be weird lol

@ejo38242 - Your good! You can slide both in. A Fusion Drive setup is much harder.

@danj thx Dan! ill prolly be buying 2019 imac soon then drop in my ssds then! kinda thought it might have little driver issues since i had issue bootcamping 2015 imac and 2018 mbp bootcamp drivers in one bootable window disc before hahaa

@danj btw whats the difference in fusion drive option tho??? should i be concerning to dodge getting fusion drived 2017/2019 too??

@ejo38242 - A Fusion Drive is where the blade SSD is used as a cache drive to a traditional HDD to improve performance. Depending on the macOS level there can be issues when converting the two drives in the fusion drive set into there discrete drives.

I don’t think you’ll have a issue but then again I haven’t attempted what you are trying.
