My laptop randomly freezes

My laptop randomly freezes until I move it or tap it, if that don't do it I turn it upside down and give it a little shake and it will unfreeze. I've already removed and cleaned the fan, upgrade to 8 gb rams, 500 gb hd and running lion os. I'm thinking maybe it's the heatsink. What do you think it could be?

2 things I suggest

1. reload the OS first, this can solve many issues, but do a archive and install, even still, it WILL not hurt to clean it, I seen what dust buildup does to computers(laptops especially!), it's not pretty

2. This is a older computer, I suggest taking it apart and cleaning the heatsinks, then use a good quality thermal paste, it could be overheating, thus in the "throttle" mode for the processor to protect it

Here is the guide

Remplacement du dissipateur thermique du MacBook Pro 13" Unibody mi-2009

The throttle mode is a protective measure for your processor in case it gets too hot, and will "throttle" at a certain temperature so the processor does not burn up and fail, so it will benefit from a cleanup and good thermal paste if the OS is no help

Try this first, then tell us what happens

If i get that Dell inspiron 1525 from my friend, trust me, it's a GREAT example of how simple it can be to fix overheating issues, and the best example i'll ever have

I recommend Artic Silver 5 or Cooler Master High Performance thermal paste

hey nick, thanks for the info. I've just being going over the steps for removing and installing the heat sink so I won't reinstall any hardware in the wrong place since I don't have access to another computer to follow the directions from ifixit, and need to go out and find some thermal paste. Will let you know how it went. Again thank you!

Overheating will usually cause the system to shut off. Another thing you can retry is checking your ram. A flaky ram chip can also cause weird anomalies. Best of luck!

that's why I am telling him to try new thermal paste first, i have seen laptops lock up from overheating, RAM is also possible, in fact, the Dell I mentioned here locked up overheating sometimes, it got so bad it shuts down now
