Kernel Panic error, MBP

A friend game me an old none working MBP 2010, when it turns on I get the apple logo and an spinning wheel and later the “panic Kernel” error “You need to restart your computer.” shows up. (already tried rebooting with option key pressed, command+R etc.)

So I decided to open it and see what I found, and I discovered a little cable that looks like is missing the connector or something, can anyone help me identify it and let me know if is fixable or replaceable?

I’m goint to try in every usb port, but at this point I thinking the keyboard may be broken??

that would be the main issue I guess, I can,t go into recovery, also i have mojave in a bootable usb, that's the one i a;ways use, catalina did not let me make the sierra usb thing, in another note i was able to boot from a Ubuntu drive and i tested the keyboard, audio, trackpad, didn't figure how to connect to wifi but everything looks good, i don't get it

@mikevillarroel - You need to use the correct version of OS for the system Mojave & Catalina are not supported on your older system you need Sierra.

Download the image file in Step 4, double click it to open the file and then drag the installer to your GUID Journaled file system USB thumb drive. Convert it following this guide: How to upgrade to macOS Sierra

@danj I did find the way to do the usb instalation with Sierra but nothing happens when pressing the option or command+R still getting the folder with the question mark

Command+R won't work here! You should be able to select the USB drive using the Option key after restarting.

I’m not an expert on kernel panics, but that shouldn’t be related. It’s the keyboard backlight cable…

ok so that's good I guess, so that makes it a software issue then? I have tried even changing the hard drive, but then I got a folder with a question mark on it

Ok. That means that the OS on the original drive was messed up, and putting in another drive gives you an error that means there isn’t an OS on that drive. This is normal. You need to either install Mac OS on your new drive or try to access the recover partition on the old drive by using these key combos on startup, try them both: Command + R, then try holding options.

So you have at least one hardware issue with the logic board. Your keyboard backlight connector is broken, This is repairable, but you’ll need to find someone who has a junker to swap out the connector.

Your OS issue will need a bootable external drive to reformat and install a fresh copy of macOS. I would recommend sticking with Sierra. Here’s the needed image file & how to setup a bootable USB thumb drive:

Thanks, I will try do do it tomorrow, but I think I got another issue, pressing Option or tring to go into recovery do nothing either

No, that's expected as the 2010 models didn't offer Internet recovery services. And as the HDD is in trouble the recovery partition if it has a newer version of OS-X may not be working.

You'll need a second Mac to first format the USB drive to GUID with a Journaled file system. Then download the installer to your working Mac double click on it to open the image file to expose the installer then drag the installer over to the USB thumb drive. flow the instructions on how to convert it to a bootable installer. Then take the USB thumb drive plug it into your struggling Mac, restart your system and press the Option (⌥) key, then use the arrow keys to select your USB thumb drive.

so, I format the new HDD and install it on the "strugglin mac" in my other "perfect Mac"I download the sierra installer and I do a bootable usb thumbdrive?

Well, Last week I replace the HDD of my 2012 iMac, Si i use it to see how bad the MBP was, I found out the following: It seems It has the shift key stuck, thats why it reboots to safeboot, and have no numbers, some weird video glitches and it is extremely laggy and slow (running macOS Yosemite) but despite I see the memory ram installed, it shows nothing, what do you guys think, btw, with this HDD I was able to go into recovery bat the option thing still is a no go, oh and I’m still unable to make that sierra bootable drive
