iMac 21.5 inch Late 2015 HDD to SSD

Hi everyone.

First of all, I want to set things clear with the model of my iMac: It is a Late 2015 21.5 inch iMac, Model A1418 and EMC 2833.

Just wanted to clarify this, because when I set up my profile, the only configuration with the EMC 2833 is a 4K iMac, which is not the one I have. Mine is NOT a 4k NOR a 5k iMac, it is a standard 1080p with 2.8 Gigahertz i5 CPU.

Question is as follows: I want to change the 1TB HDD which came with mi iMac with an SSD. Problem is I´m totally new to this world, and I´ve never opened an Apple device.

I would like to change the old 1TB HDD 5400 RPM to a new 1TB SSD, so I need help with the whole process: How to disassembly the iMac, how to remove the HDD, which SSD to buy (I want a good, fast but not so expensive one), how to install the new SSD, etc.

I heard that in some cases, there was a problem with the fans going crazy with SSD in iMacs, so I really need help about that, too (heard there were some thermal sensors to plug in to the new SSD to avoid that). Also, I don´t want to loose any of my HDD data, what I want is to “clone” my HDD to the new SSD.

Any advice, tutorial, guide or help is really appreciated in advance.

Thank you so much, guys.

Are you sure? The A1418 EMC 2889 Late 2015 is the non 4k model

@danj Am I sure about what? About the EMC? Well, I just double checked the stand of my iMac and it says EMC 2833. So that´s why I chose that EMC over the EMC 2889

@richyfixesit - Very odd! I would open up the About this Mac under the Apple menu to see what it says.

Thanks for the guides, Dan. Everything sees quite doable.

Just one question (which I asked earlier): In this particular setup, and my particular iMac (21.5 inch non 4K 2.8Ghz late 2015) will I need any thermal sensor attached to my new SSD?

I wouldn´t want to perform the whole process and reassembly of the iMac just to find out the fans getting crazy and the noise stuff.

@richyfixesit - The newer Thin 21.5" series iMacs 2012 onwards use SMART services with the 2.5" drives. The 27" models through to 2013 require the sensor.

The kit get you everything you need.
