"SSD Upgrade Bundle" (is it complete)?

I'm considering the iMac Intel 21.5" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Bundle iMac Intel 21.5" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit

I reviewed the Replacement Guide.

I've looked at some forums. Several issues come up that are not addressed by the Replacement Guide.

  1. Is the enclosure in the picture mounted inside the IMac, or do I need an additional bracket that I would have to purchase separately. To me, the enclosure in the photo does not look like it would fit in the iMac. In other words, is the bundle complete?
  2. What about the heat sensor. Is that addressed by the bundle?
  3. I read that IMac need the same brand hard drive as the came with originally. If I am going from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD, that would not be possible. What am I missing?

All of this to say, can I buy the bundle, trust Ifixit, and not worry about anything and just follow the Guide and expect it to work or do I need to worry about everything I ever read on the internet about this and ask every question until I get frustrated.

Here is my iMac info.

I already have USB adaptor that plugs into a hard drive, so I don't need the enclosure that comes with the bundle.

I'm upgrading my RAM at the same time as the hard drive, so I don't think I need the bundle at all, just the hard drive and whatever extras, discussed below.

Am I understanding this correctly, that I DO NOT need the thermal sensor (because I have a 21.5")? Am I also correct that the brand of the SSD does not need to match whatever brand of hard drive I currently have in the iMac?

It appears that I also need a adaptor bracket. The SSD is not the same size as a mechanical hard drive so this bracket holds the SSD but also mounts to the larger space left by the replaced hard drive. It appears that this bracket is not included in the bundle. Can someone please provide a link to that bracket?

What else, if anything, do I need to complete this task? I don't want to find out that I'm missing something once the computer is open.

Thanks.

Here is my current thinking. I will be upgrading the RAM with the kit.

It appears if I want to upgrade my SATA drive at the same time to SSD, all I need is the SSD, no cables, no adaptors not brackets and no heat sensors. The SSD will fit in the same spot as the old SATA and the existing cable will fit the SSD.

Since I'm upgrading my RAM with the kit, and I have a USB cable that plugs in to my old laptop drive that I don't need the bundle. I don't see that Ifixit sells an SSD drive without the bundle. Would it be safe to buy the bare drive, like this? https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAN...

I've seen two choices for transferring data. first, cloning the existing drive before I take apart the iMac or second, installing the SSD (after formatting it) then installing the OS from the internet and using time machine to restore. Do I need to plan for either of these now? I prefer the second method if possible.

Is it safe to assume that the USB to SATA cable that I own that plugs in to the back of 2.5" laptop drive will also work with the SATA drive coming out of the iMac or do I need the enclosure that come with the bundle?

    • The Case is to hold your original drive externally
  2. What about the heat sensor. Is that addressed by the bundle?
    • This series uses 2.5" drives which leverage S.M.A.R.T. services as such no external sensor needed unlike th 27" models
  3. I read that IMac need the same brand hard drive as the came with originally. If I am going from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD, that would not be possible. What am I missing?
    • Different series have different needs. The older 2009 & 2010 systems leveraged the internal manufactures diagnostics sensor. In the 2011 systems Apple had the drive makers alter their drives which is why you need to use their drives unless you use a special external thermal sensor.

So while I understand your concerns, this series is one of the easier ones to swap out. As long as you use care removing the display as its easy to damage if you don't use the correct tools and techniques as described in the following guide

@David Gruenberg - You'll need the adhesive strips with the special cutter iMac Intel 21.5" (2012-2019) Adhesive Strips I would recommend getting two sets just in case.

Here's the guide to replace the RAM Remplacement de la RAM dans un iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K 2017 Make sure you get the correct RAM iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 3069 (Mid 2017, 4K Display) Memory Maxxer RAM Upgrade Kit which also offers the adhesive strips & tool. If you had a Fusion Drive you'll want to pull the caching drive otherwise you'll have problems.

No sensor! This series uses S.M.A.R.T. services. The older 27” needed it.

The current SATA HDD is a 2.5” and the SATA SSD is likewise a 2.5” drive no adapter needed!

Now if you are planing on using a PCIe/NVMe blade SSD drive that’s a different drive than what you selected. If you are upgrading the RAM then maybe it would be smart to replace the blade SSD with a bigger and better drive! iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display (2017) Blade SSD Replacement I would go with either a 480GB or 1TB, then make it your boot drive it will offer almost twice the performance over the slower SATA interface!

Hi David,

the enclosure is for you old HDD - by the cable it's USB 3.x enclosure (external drive).

About brand - I had WD/Crucial/SanDisk(WD)/OCZ and couple other brands in my iMac's so I don't think that you need same brand :)

Can you give as exact model of your iMac please so we can help you bit more :)

Rob

Storage Dimensions: 2.5" (7 mm)* Storage Interface: Serial ATA (6 Gb/s)*

Details: *This model has a SATA III (6 Gb/s) connector for a 2.5" hard drive or SSD. If the system is configured with an SSD or a "Fusion Drive" at the time of initial purchase, it also has a dedicated PCIe connection. If it was not configured with an SSD or a "Fusion Drive" initially, the applicable PCIe connector is not present and it is not possible to install a second drive later.

So technically you need only SSD drive and this.

I have a SATA, not a fusion drive.

Than you can upgrade only to SSD.
