ASUS P8H61-M LX3 Plus R2.0 No display on this motherboard?

i've been messing with my computer for a bit, but for some reason it's just decided to stop showing any display on the screen. at all.

i don't see any reason it would as it just happened while i was messing in the BIOS, and the settings weren't saved yet. and yes, i've attempted to reset the BIOS settings through the manual's jumper method and removing the CMOS battery, but all it did was make the computer confused on startup. i've also attempted to just have it run for a long time in desperation, but no change

edit: before someone asks, No, i don't think the computer isn't booting as i know it is (the hard drives were warm when i opened it up one time), it's just refusing to make an output for no reason

edit edit: i should elaborate: by confused, i mean it's turning off and turning back on in an attempt to properly boot (which it eventually does... still without display output)

Hi @pwns2009

When you removed the cmos battery, did you then press and hold the power On button for 30 seconds before reinserting the battery?

Also was the AC power disconnected from the PSU before you did this?

par

@jayeff all of that, and i kept the CMOS battery outside of the slot for more than 30 minutes just in case

Is the monitor connected to a GPU card's video port or the motherboard's vga port?

If a GPU card, have the monitor got a vga input?

Maybe try that in case there's a problem with the GPU card.

Just verifying that you've proved that the monitor is working OK?

par

@jayeff there's no GPU, i'm using integrated graphics, which worked fine until it stopped displaying on the screen. as a test, i did insert the GPU from my main PC and it didn't show an output either.

as for the monitor, yes, both the motherboard and display have VGA, which i was already using, and the monitor definitely works by the fact i'm currently using it to type this comment on my main computer :)

Try disconnecting the C: drive (or all the HDDs) from the motherboard and check if there's a display, either a message (hopefully no OS found) or if there a display in BIOS

Just because the HDDs are warm doesn't mean that the PC is booting. They're turned on at startup.

The motherboard has to pass POST first (power on self test) before booting the OS

Is the case's HDD activity light blinking, staying on etc after starting the PC? That's one way to tell if its booting i.e. OS is loading

Can only suggest that you go back to a barebones PC i.e. motherboard (CPU and ram), PSU, monitor and keyboard.

No mouse, no HDD, no DVD, no USBs etc and then check.

If still no BIOS display then the power refresh hasn't worked and it's not passing POST

Try connecting a system speaker to the header pins (see p.1-26 (36 of 68 pdf) of the user manual) and check for any beep error codes on startup.

"No mouse, no HDD, no DVD, no USBs etc" that's how i've been testing the machine, and the system speaker seems adamant on not beeping ._. (seems normal as the only time i've ever heard it beep in my life is hearing it beep in complaint of a keyboard not being plugged in when booting to HDD)

par

You should hear one beep if it passes POST and starts to boot.

You said you tried booting a dvd so unless the dvd drive is not enabled in the boot order list in BIOS, then with no HDD installed, it should have stepped through the boot order list to find it and boot from it.

Try removing the ram and check if it beeps. If not then as ram is checked early on in POST it's not even getting that far or even starting POST

Perhaps get a motherboard diagnostic card and check if that tells you anything.

Also assuming the PSU is an ATX type, use the paperclip test to make sure all the voltages are all OK.

par

@jayeff for post, i removed the RAM and it did start complaining, so it's still alive at the very least

as for the motherboard diagnostic card and paperclip test suggestion, i don't have a diagnostic card and the paperclip test page mentions a multimeter, which i don't have

edit: and sorry for being 2 days late

Do you know anyone that has a DMM that you can borrow.

Only suggested that you check the PSU voltages if only to eliminate it as a cause of the problem.

I don't know the full sequence of hardware checks in POST but given that the BIOS beep error code link above shows the beep "errors" in ascending order of number of long and short beeps i.e. 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 it's not detecting that the video controller is faulty or that the CPU (temp) or CPU fan is faulty either. It did show the the ram was faulty when you removed it but it still doesn't give a single short beep indicating that POST was successful, which would enable you to get into BIOS with a display, so for some reason it isn't finishing POST.

It may be that there are other hardware controllers that it checks but as to which ones I don't know. That's why I suggested getting a diagnostics card. That should tell you what is happening. There should be documentation wit the card as to what the codes on the card mean which would help to know where to look on the board

par

@jayeff for it not booting after complaining about something being wrong with the ram (i checked the error code, it's what it's complaining about), it just gives up and just beeps the error. for if anyone has a diagnostics card that i can borrow, i don't really know anyone who has one

For me, when my PC was refusing to boot/display, it turned out that one of the CPU pins was misaligned, so maybe check that? Also, I would honestly recommend removing all of your components, and then putting them back in. Also, when you turn on the computer, does the LED on the motherboard turn on? Finally, have you tried switching your input source/monitor input/cable?

the motherboard light does turn on, as for the CPU pins, i haven't touched them since i tested the computer for the first time (when the display WAS working)

for the cables, they worked the first time and they work on my main computer, so i doubt they're the issue (i don't have any backup cables anyway)
