Not a true teardown, but more of a look inside and a breakdown of how this rather confusing speaker works

    • It's quite difficult to get the front cover off, but once it is it will expose the tweeter, woofer, and one of the 2 passive radiators.

    How do I get this cover of, it feels like the bottom is going to snap, I can't seem to get the base of the speaker detached, please help

    did you remove the screws on the base hidden by the oval shape rubber grip pad?

    • The back cover isnt a cover like the front is, it IS the back. Removing all the face screws will allow it to rather easily pop off and expose the inside.

    • Inside here we will find an onyx tweeter, aura sub, and both of the weighted omni passive radiators.

    • There's also a SINGLE 18650 battery and the main board.

    • Tweeter is 4 Ohm, Woofer is 2 Ohm. Remember this as it will be used on the next page

    • Not too much to see here, Bluetooth module and its antenna, AK7755EN DAC and various power supplies and the output filters for the amplifier. A DC-DC boost converter supplies higher voltage for the amplifiers.

    • Under the heatsink lies 2 TPA3116D2's that I believe are running in PBTL.

    • Here's where it gets complicated and long-winded. The speaker has 2 operating modes. Battery and AC power, Which is a 19V 2A brick. When running on battery supply voltage bounces between 7V-10V when measured at pin 32 of the TPA's. When plugged supply voltage sits at a much more stable 12V.

    • The DAC also implements an aggressive compressor when on battery power. Power AT THE WOOFER on battery was 5.9V which comes to 17.5W into 2 Ohms. When plugged in voltage jumped to 9V, which at 2 ohms is 40.5W! I didn't power test the tweeter, but I'm going to guess battery is around 3W-5W and plugged in is around 10W.

Hey Bassblaster,

Perhaps a weird question, recently I decided to upgrade my Harman Kardon Onyx 6's battery, since the current battery is not working as good as new.

My question is, since I'm increasing the capacity anyhow, how do you think you can "mod" the amp into giving more voltage to the speakers on battery? And what would you recommend to change? Disconnect some traces to the DAC?

Modding may be possible but you would need either a schematic of the unit or reverse engineer the PCB to modify the DC-DC boost converter. but then you do run the risk of popping on of the drivers as JBL/Harmon Kardon do a pretty good job of matching the amplifiers compressor to the speakers. Such as when i had this Studio 5 apart foe example i was able to bottom out the woofer, when its together it cant do that due to the pressure of the enclosure even though im sure the amplifier has the power to do so. Disconnecting traces to the DAC probably isnt a good idea, i could be wrong but im failing to see how the digital to analog converter would have any say on supply voltage

Little question....

you said Aura sub 2 ohms inside this studio 5

i get Used Studio 6 in my local Repair-Café, but this Speaker work with a big big vibration with subwoofer.

Curiously the system seems working good without the two covers open, but when the covers are closed, the horrible vibration is here.

I thinked perhaps replace the Sub, but i don't find this part anyway.

My observation show a big course of the sub's membrane

could you advice me about this ?

My Studio 5 Sounds tally blown after i dropped it, i opened it to se if there is any tear in the rubber ring or any broken pieces causing the rattle, but i couldn't find any, and after opening it dose not sound blow at all, what could be the problem.

By a mistake I plugged an e-bike charger into my HK studio 5. The wrong charger says «Output 42V 1.35A», while the original HK charger says «Output 19V 2.1A». There was no weird sound or anything when I did this. After this the speaker has been completely drar. Not a single light/sound/anything. I’ve disassembled the speaker looking for a fuse or something that could be replaced, can’t find it. I’m a medical doctor and not an electro engineer, and I was hoping someone in here could give me a clue what to do?

42V is certainly a bit high for this speakers guts. i think you may have pretty well zapped at minimum the entire power supply and charging circuit of it. There may be a fuse inside but i dont recall, its been too long since i tore this one down
