Why is my screen blinking?

So I bought a new laptop 2 weeks ago that worked fine. Now however the screen is blinking. It turns on and off every 3-4 seconds. It doesn't do it as much when i use it or when i play games. I can mostly notice it when i leave it on of a while.

I tried downloading and updating drivers a lot of times but nothing seems to work.

sup man, mine was doing the same for about 4 months but finally ave been able to solve it myself.

Its not a software problem but a hard ware issue and by hardware I dont mean you need to change anything.

step 1....Open the laptop from the bottom

step 2....After youve been able to open dont go any further.

step 3.....You will see some few cables runing for the screen to the hub of the pc.

step 4......make sure all those cables from the monitor are well conected by pushing it well into the port with a a lil presure.

step 5....Put the case back without screwing it just incase it doesnt totally go.

step 6.... If it still persists make sure that any wire from the monitor to the main hardwares are all well conected and in the right channel.

7....Restart your machine again.

AM HOPING THIS HELPS AS IT SOLVED MINE.

Am currently using windows 10 with JOY and smiles all over my face.

I was skeptical about hardware issues at first. I did try fiddling with the cables that runs from the screen to the hub of the pc, through the bottom of the lap top but that did not work for me.

However, i did pop the screen out and applied pressure to ports connected to the back of the screen. Have not seen those %#*@ F*****g blinking since then.

Believe it or not, it worked. There is a video on youtube about lcd replacement that walks you through screen removal. i own the touch screen option and this setup was different from the video. but pretty much the same. with the use of a card, remove the plastic cover along the bottom of the screen to reveal two screws that holds the screen in place. remove screws, slide screen up and its out. apply pressure to the ports and reinstall screen.

got same problem with my brand new y50-70.

screen was blinking on win8.1 when idle, same after win10 migration.

no blinking when gaming.

after many forensics, I'm sure the problem come from the Realtek PCIE card reader drivers. if you disable it, no more blinking.

no blinking under Linux too.

I had same problem with my Lenovo Y70. Removed bottom cover and unplug the monitor connector from the hub and reconnected it. It is located right hand side on the top. That made it better but not fixed. So I also disconnected then reconnected the monitor connector behind the LCD display. This fixed it to 100%. No more blinking/flashing. Im guessing the issue lies in a bad design with the connector on both end for the monitor, they can work there self loose.

I know exactly what you are speaking of i had the same issue after trying every possible software fix i diagnosed the issue to be a lose connector of the back of the screen.

Screen blinks intermittently at random

horizontal flicking lines from time to time

well lucky its a rather simple fix watch the YouTube video i linked for a screen replacement on the y50 but instead of replacing the screen just remove and snugly reattach the display connector and tada problem solved at first i was hesitant about doing this myself but once i was able to stomach it was not that hard

Problem solved! After trying to find new drivers, that don’t exist, browsing forums and tried all stupid advices - clean the power supply jack, readjust screen resolution and screen refresh rate etc., finally I just went to Device Manager and check the driver, and just find that there was evidently new driver installed before the purchase (probably because my model is with the new FHD LED Display, so I have an option to “roll back the old driver”, which I did and “voila” – no more flickering, picture is perfect!

Which driver it was ? Can you spesify the version? Thx

I was seeing the same issue of screen flickering constantly which was very annoying.

Symptom : If the filckering responds to swinging your laptop screen. (Say if you swing your screen back and forth and the flickering stops)

then most likely its Hardware / connection issue.

I opened up the bottom portion or my Y70 and also top one behind the screen and just plugged out and re plugged in the screen cables (the ones that connect the bottom piece with top piece) and i am not seeing the issue currently. Hopefully its gone if not i will update this post. Fingers crossed.

Good luck

I had the same problem, but found this BIOS update through the customer service;

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products...

It fixed it completely (I wasn't allowed to open it up due to warranty so I never tried that).

I had this issue with Lenovo Y70 touch and screen flickering and blinking horizontal lines (not in games). The solution was bios upgrade - I've loaded new bios - version from 10.2015. It works - since 2 weeks now blinking and lines are gone. :) So if you have this problem - try bios first. 5 minutes and problem is gone.

My new Y70 was flickering from the get go (ever 7 to 15 seconds really). Went to lenovo support and requested a call back (took them about one minute to do this). The technician ran the trouble shooting steps and after testing in bios, and safe mode it was determined that a driver of some sort was the issue. The technician performed a recovery procedure (I had the technician take remote control of my computer) and a factory reset solved the problem. This of course is a factory reset so if one goes this route all installed software needs to be reinstalled. However, this solved the problem and the technician said to turn off the automatic driver updates (it updates generic stuff but this machine has some custom ones). All driver updates, get them from the lenovo site for this machine. But no more flickering. Happy machine.

Hello, I have had this problem on my y40-70. This is caused by changes to the locked bios. The bios has 2 modes, one for OEM and one for end users. The one for the OEM can seriously affect thing such as the graphics. This caused the flickering for me when using high-end graphics on battery. This issue can be resolved by simply upgrading the BIOS. If there is no update available, and you cannot flash the BIOS, clear the CMOS (on a desktop machine this is done by the CMOS jumper, but on a laptop its different). YOu have to open up the computer, and since your model is the y50, it is done by removing the screws on the bottom and prying the back cover off. Then you have to remove the main battery (look up lenovo y50 hardware manual), and the button cell battery that is attached with a red and black twisted wire (just pull from the wire). After doing so, you need to let the capacitors discharge by waiting approx. 10 minutes. After doing so, reattach the batteries (the CMOS and the main) and reboot the machine into the BIOS screen (using the onekey button). Set the date and time (as reseting the CMOS resets the date and time) and VOILA, your problem is fixed!

My problem is little different. Yesterday it was no display on my computer but after removing the battery to fix this problem. I just found another problem that is, after sometimes of loading the operating system my screen disappear with different colors lines and dots. I tried it on Windows 7 and also Linux. But the problem still the same. Sometimes during the loading of home screen this problem arrives. And when lines arrives on my screen system is halted. I can't do any work. I must power off with long pressing the power button. My laptop is lenovo u41-70 i7 4gb of ram with Nvidia 940. So please anyone guide me what to do?

I had a flickering problem with mine. Turned out it was the cable from the motherboard to the screen. Fixed it after changing it 3 times. Seems the first replacements were as bad as the factory one. Very poor quality check at Lenovo.

Hi @the7sense

Which cable did work for you eventually? Care to post a link?

I want to buy the "good" version

I changed 2 cables that were both bad and the 3rd worked fine. The problem was with the motherboard to screen cable. There is only one of these cables, so it should be fairly obvious. The replacement was bought from a local repair shop and they installed it for me. They did the same thing I did and as stated, the previous 2 were just bad (this includes the factory one).
