I have the same problem, just static noise while it is hooked to cable, other tvs on the same line have no problem. If I hook my laptop to the tv using hdmi cable the sound is fine,

Please post the model number. This will help to narrow down specifics. Also, how is the set connected to the cable box? Coax? A/V cable?
Since the HDMI connection works as expected, the sound processing portion of the set is also working. This means that we need to concentrate on the audio input section.
