iPhone XR stuck in Boot Loop - anyway to recover data?

Hello,

I have an iPhone XR that is stuck in a boot loop. It happened after attempting to back-up the phone using iTunes (the phone’s memory is full), and I got a message that said that there was an error during the backup. I unplugged the phone and all the apps were stuck and wouldn’t open, so I tried restarting the phone. It has been stuck in a boot loop since, when it turns on I just see an Apple logo, and sometimes it blinks. Force restarting doesn’t help, it just keeps showing the Apple logo after it turns off.

I also tried to bring the phone to “recovery mode” and I see an option on iTunes that prompts me to either update or restore, but after the update downloads it tells me that it couldn’t update because the “firmware is not compatible”. I read about DFU recovery mode, but it seems like that would do a full restore (losing data).

After some research I found some programs like: Fonelab, iMyFone D-back, Dr.fone, and Tuneskit. There is a trial option, but I think I will have to pay to use it, which I’m willing to do, but I want to make sure it will work.

Does anyone have any experience with these programs, or something similar? Or is there any other way to try and restore the iPhone’s OS without losing data? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as there’s a lot of data that I’d hate to lose…

They are all effective, but their prices are different as you might have noticed.

What makes the price difference is their brand awareness, and my personal recommendation is Joyoshare iPhone Data recovery.

Hi everyone,

I see a lot of people are having this issue as well, and are asking if I got the problem fixed... Unfortunately I could not. I have done a lot of research and it seems that in my case the entire OS was corrupted and needed restoration.

I do not have a trusted/knowledgeable 3rd party data recovery service in my area so I had to restore the iPhone.

I know this is frustrating.. as some of you have also experienced, this can happen suddenly and without warning even to a relatively new iPhone. Even though *some* people reported success with using 3rd party software, it appears to depend on specific cases.

I hope you all could find a way to recover your data, my best advice that I can give it to regularly backup your iPhones as it seems to be the only reliable way.

I had one that was constantly looping . After a lot of research and attempts I discovered the fault was on the power/volume button ribbon

If there is a hardware fail at startup it will loop

Remove the cover and disconnect the pop plugs one at a time and try to boot it each time after disconnecting . If it does the same put that one back in and try the next one ... Also include the battery in this procedure and power it via the cable

Good luck

Hi guys. Just now successfully restored bootlooped, out of memory, iPhone 8 plus.

I installed the latest available iTunes on my Windows 11 laptop, made sure it's complete updated. Connected phone via cable to the laptop and turned it on in download mode (vol up -> vol down -> hold power until cable and laptop graphics appear). ITunes suggested "update" and "restore" options. I've choosed "update" and accepted terms. Than I've vaited until the firmware get downloaded (iPhone will exit from download mode after 15 minutes). I've turned the phone on in this mode again. Firmware process have started.

In the middle of the process the "unknown error" message appeared (code 100), so I've decided to repeat all over again after rebooting laptop and phone. This time, after several minutes, some iTunes' popup window appeared and quickly disappeared (didn't have a chance to see its content). But iPhone got the white screen and offered to proceed with the restoring process. That's all, all the data is saved.

AFAIK none of the software you mentioned would be able to recover your data since you have a bootlooping, even less they can help you getting out of bootloop. The only App I’d feel like trying would be 3Utools, does the same as iTunes but at times it reaches where iTunes fails. Just choose the option to update and keep data if you want to give it a try. Don’t blame me if things go wrong, I’m not the developer nor have personal interests with them, mine is just a possible alternative, each has to take one own responsabilities.

The only option to recover data from a bricked iPhone on apple logo is to apply an update on top. This option would be to update the phone rather than restore it which would wipe your data.

Usually what happens is if it's successful you'll be able to backup the phone and free up space. If it is not successful you'd get a error code usually between -20 to -30 which most of them indicate file system corruption that is unrepairable without a restore . You can also try forcing an update while the phone is in DFU mode. I believe this option is only available in 3utools to do it that way.

This is here is the only way to get out of a boot loop. So ensure all data is always backed up from your iPhone as this can happen at any time. especially during iOS updates.

Arbaman is right, your phone has to boot before those third party recovery programs will work. Since it is not booting it would be a waste of money.

If your phones memory is indeed full there is no solution at the moment to retrieve it. My advice would be to put it in a draw with your passcode and hope Apple will have a change of heart in situations like this and let you downgrade the IOS.

Ben might be able to give you some more details if he reads this thread.

Hey, I've got similar storage and bootloop problems but somehow It was fixed successfully.

Got iPhone XR, IOS 13.6.1, data was backed up only to several months ago.

Couple of days ago I've got a notification about full storage, tried to delete several files, applications and videos, but it was not seemed to be actually deleted. Thought a restart would help, and got into the boot loop situation. Read online and was very worried about the potential data loss.

First tried using 3Utools "iTunes flash" - "retain user data" option with the same IOS installed (13.6.1) but got error 3002 in about 10% of the process. Tried using 3Utools "iTunes flash" - "retain user data" option with newest IOS 14.2 and got another error with a frightening message ("The drive will be deeply formatted after the reboot to prevent the recovery of drive data"). Tried the same with 3U tools "easy flash" - "retain user data" and got similar message.

So I stopped using 3Utools, and started using ITUNES (latest version of 12.10.10.2 from 22.10.2020). Used Apple's manual for an Update https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201412 , was patient though nervous and almost the whole process seemed fine, no error 14 was received. Only in the end of the update process got on the iPhones' screen a frozen white background with apple logo, but heard notification sounds from the device. Made a force restart and the device got back to life, with the latest data used before the bootloop, and with the updated IOS of 14.2 instead 13.6.1!

I'm not sure what made it work differently than other reports here. Maybe the latest ITUNES version, or the fact that I actually had about 3-4GBs free in the device.

Not responsible for the stuff I've reported here. Good luck!

Hey, so all you did was use iTunes and hit 'upgrade'? You let iTunes automatically handle the update and it worked? nothing else?

due to money issues, I havent been able to get an external hd for my computer for awhile. For the past week my 11 has been sluggish and tonight I finally got a hard drive, emptied my pc out and began doing a backup on my phone. Began doing a bootloop and couldnt get out of it. No way out of it and I finally tried alons suggestion of 3utools, Got errors 3 times and tried itunes again to no avail. Attempted 3u a 4th time and it went completely through and my phone is back to life. I am at this moment doing a full backup of my phone in 3utools. Once thats a success, I am doing the same in itunes again, then making 2 copies of my backups on an sd card lol!!!! Thanks for the bit of help alon!!

par

Thank you Alon Naor, at least a positive story for a case very similar to mine helped me keep my faith up as I knew I had probably less than 2gb before the boot loop.

So I prayed and kept on trying the iTunes update option because I had no backup for a year and didn’t want to lose data.

I got error messages 9 and 14 multiple times but didn’t give up. I kept trying the update option

Thankfully my prayers were answered and my phone (11 pro) finally came out of the boot loop with no data lose, just updated to the latest iOS (14.6)

par

Hi Sophie! If you can read this, same thing happened to me! I fixed mine by updating to the latest iOS. But I’m scared that it will happen again. Did yours bootloop ever again after fixing it?

I have the EXACT same problem with my XR from '“all the apps were stuck and wouldn’t open” to the error in Recovery Mode while updating, I’m hoping to find a solution to recover my data too, in fact I just want my pictures…

Did you find a solution ?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a solution. I tried different programs (3utools, dr.fone, and iMyFone), and none of them worked :(

I dont understand how something like this could happen, especially when all I did was try and back up the iPhone via iTunes.. AND it's a relatively new phone!

In the end, I had to do a factory reset and ended up losing some data. I used my old phone to recover some older pictures, and my contacts were synced to iCloud.

I still have 1month before my warranty expire, should I bring it to apple support?

Has anyone found a fix to this? My phone is endlessly looping and I am worried that if I even put it into dfu mode and try to update Apple told me there is a chance all of the data will be erased. Can anyone confirm that once you put your phone in dfu mode and try to update via iTunes that if it fails you are in the same place as you were before or have you done more damage and deleted data. I have all my wedding photos from last year and if I were to lose those it would really kill me. Please reply with any help.

I am having all the same problems mentioned above, and all over the internet. Only been using the Xr for a year. I have spent money on the fix-it programs praised on YouTube and none have worked. Apple stores are closed due to the Coronavirus (so they should really step up and help right now - just answer every question online for so many struggling due to what is out of our hands?!). Why can Apple create phones that each have increasing cases of the SAME problems, but vanish or charge for or throw their hands up on solutions? I really hope someone comes along with a working solution, A FREE SOLUTION, purely out of true kindness. Like a Robin Hood Programmer! <3 :D

I would send it to ipad rehab, they are world known. They charge 300 dollars and if they can't get the data they don't charge you. They have a YouTube channel iPad rehab ipadrehab.com the owner is jessa. She just got data off of an ipad that was left out in the weather for 10 months. She has reretreived many iPhones that has water damage and wouldn't turn on. You has been on news programs and has done videos for ifixit.

I logged into iTunes plugged in the phone, did the hard restart (vol up - vol down - hold the power button until the phone turns off and stays off) then selected update. Supposedly if it updates your data will be saved. Unfortunately mine came up with an error. I repeated the steps and it told me it couldn't be updated so I had to do a factory reset. I lost my data but did manage to get my phone back. Good luck and I hope you have better results than I did.

I have an iPhone 6 with 64 GB of storage, just yesterday I recorded a lot of videos and it stopped automatically due to full storage. When trying to send photos using LINE, the app keeps on crashing so I tried to delete videos from Photos app. The videos disappear but suddenly return back to Photos, then I opened recently deleted folder to clear it first before attempting to delete other videos, but when I opened recently deleted folder, all of its contents are white and they won't disappear even after I select delete all. I thought maybe a quick restart will fix it but I was wrong, my iPhone was stuck in bootloop for hours. I tried updating through iTunes but keep getting Error 1100 three times. Finally I tried 3uTools, tried iTunes Flash 3 times but still getting Error 1100, then tried Easy Flash but the connection was interrupted so I need to force restart my iPhone twice and restart the 3uTools program, didn't continue using Easy Flash so I don't know what will happen, I instead try iTunes Flash once more and it succeed, my iPhone turned on with all data still intact.

I dont have much info but this exact same thing happened to my Iphone 8 plus 2 nights ago. I have called many data recovery specialists and they all pretty much say the same thing- they cant bipass error 14 to get to the data. I was also told to keep my phone, dont do anything else to it, and maybe one day apple or technology in generally will come up with a way to bipass error 14. I am devastated as well, as I lost very special, important pictures and videos of my sons birth and his first 4 months of his life. I am so sorry you all are dealing with this too.

Same issue as the previous poster, but with lots of different information about potential causes and solutions. I’m devastated. The phone was 6 months old. I had many precious memories and pictures of my kids and daughter who was born just days after I got the phone. With Covid19, options are further limited. Apple was initially no help and I need to set aside hours to try and get to the right person. I had iCloud back up turned on and it would not work. It kept saying there was an issue. My memory was full (phone, not iCloud). We tried to get the pictures off and on to the computer and that wasn’t working either. Prior to it going into a boot loop, it was turning off and restarting. If it wasn’t for stores being closed, I would have brought it straight in when I realized I couldn’t get the pictures off. I was told there were “86 updates I was behind on.” How is that possible when I had the phone 6 months? No way haha. Every time I speak with Apple they are short and reading from a prompt and throw their hands up after I try the 1-2 basic things they suggest. I must not be calling the right support. Never once did the phone tell me I had an update. They told us I had the settings turned off, but that wasn’t true to my knowledge. I had even looked for an update because I figured after months I would of had one. If that were true, it came that way and I had no idea. The back up phone they overnighted to me appeared different in the settings. I want answers to why? This has happened to me with each and every phone and iCloud is NOT safe alone for your pictures. It has never worked for me, even when I’m doing everything right. It never automatically downloads connected to power and on WiFi like I set it up to. If it does download it picks and chooses some of my data now and then. Why?! I’m devastated at the thought of losing all my pictures and videos of my kids. I could careless about the phone.

When looking at the iCloud I can see that there is a back up... but I can’t see what it is and nor could Apple. I’m tired of them sending me replacements and demanding my new phones back with my precious data and they throw their hands up to a solution beyond replacing my phone and likely with a refurbished one to boot (they claim it’s new, but I beg to differ). Stand by your products. Help people out. I feel like I lost something incredibly special to me and they act like it’s no big deal. $1500 phone should not have that many issues after 6 months. I might not have been the greatest owner, but I did what they said and it never worked. I have regrets with how I handled things and being too trusting of that device.

After the years of heartache over these issues I should just move on from Apple products altogether. I go through periods of time where I only use my cameras for pictures and videos. I suggest the same to anyone else. Use the phone as a phone only. It’s why I find I have no need for an iPhone. If I can’t get my pictures back and this keeps happening, I don’t want an iPhone at all. Will be using my nicer camera for everything from now on. Back up your camera pictures to multiple places. Memory cards are cheaper these days. Save those and still back them up. It’s what I’m going to only be doing from now on. I got into a habit of reaching for my cell. We use them too much as it is. I’ve learned my lesson.

I hope I can find the right person to get my data back for me. I’m willing to spend the time and the inevitable money to get my things back. We have looked into a lot of third party data recovery companies. It’s what I would suggest after you’ve exhausted every option.

My phone is now stuck in recovery mode. We plugged it in to update when it was stuck in the boot loop and it appeared to have updated, but somewhere failed and I still couldn’t get my phone back. I’m not a tech wizard and I’m going to spend time trying to educate myself. I refuse to take no for an answer and believe there’s no way I can retrieve my data.

I have read in several places this is common with the new phones. I’m mad at myself for being trusting again just to be the most disappointed I’ve been with an Apple product.

I do think there is hope from all the research and companies willing to try (many that won’t charge unless they get your data).

Potential picture/video loss is a terrible feeling! I am stuck in an ugly sad limbo until I have tried everything. I’m pretty upset about it. I feel sorry for anyone who has been here. Guess I’m the fool, it’s not my first time!

Organize your precious pictures and videos and back them up to multiple places.

Don’t trust ICloud. Use an actual camera more often. All I have to say. Hopefully I find a someone with a solution, to which I will sing it’s/their praises. Fingers crossed.

Good luck to everyone!

Ally I agree with everything you've said here. As of today, after visiting a data recovery shop, I-phone repair shop and personally attempting a DFU to no avail, I feel duped as a customer of Apple. This is not the first or second or third time (I've been using I-phones since the 3 came out) and this phone (Iphone X) is only 9 months old from an apple store, always inside a super heavy duty Otterbox.. This company has become a shell of its former self. APPLE should be investigated by the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, for unfair and deceptive practices, too many "problems" zero solutions!

I’m having the same issue! My phone had told me that my storage was full a couple times today and wouldn’t let me take pictures. I was at my best friend’s bridal shower and I was in charge of taking pictures. I went into my camera roll, deleted a ton of photos, emptied my Recently Deleted section, and then I was fine to take pictures. When I got home, I went through and deleted more old pictures, that weren’t of value to me, and emptied my Recently Deleted again. (So that I wouldn’t have the issue of my phone storage being full again in the near future.) Afterwards, I opened Snapchat to check it before bed and the app shut down. This happened 3x and then I finally just shut my phone off because I thought it may need a ‘break’. When I turned it back on, I was stuck in a boot loop for hours. (I had hoped that plugging it in might help, because I wondered if the battery had been low before I was able to get my hands on my bf’s work phone to try to research how to troubleshoot the issue.) It just continued to boot loop. I watched a YouTube video that suggested a hard reset. (A quick Volume Up, Volume Down, then holding the side button until the Apple logo disappears because the phone shuts down, then reappears and you let go of the side button.) The boot loop continued. I have now just shut my phone off by doing Volume Up, Volume Down, and holding the side button until the Apple logo blinks and letting go when the phone has shut down, before the logo reappears in an attempt to reboot. My phone didn’t back up to iCloud yet, after the shower this evening, so I can’t just restore anything from my last update because it would mean that I’ve lost ALL of the pictures of her bridal shower that I can never get back.

i am having similar issue with iphone XR … i woke up in the morning today to find my iphone storage full… tried to delete some apps and videos but they were not deleting and then all of a sudden my iphone is stuck on the apple logo. I have 1 year of pictures and videos of my 2 year old which i have not transferred or backed up. Tried force starting and updating the phone in recovery mode but it said UNEXPECTED ERROR 14. i have not tried up any third party apps yet but from reading the above comments, i dont think they are of any good. Hopefully, Apple will come up with a solution to fix this issue as this is totally unexpected and i do not want to restore and loose all my photos and videos. You buy such an expensive phone and this is what happens. They should have sold the phone with a disclaimer that “ ALL YOUR DATA WILL BE LOST IF YOUR STORAGE GETS FULL” .

Adroid phones dont have this issue. I am surely going to stop buying Iphones if Apple is unable to resolve this issue. Is there any apple forum where we can get some help or put our requests for “A SOLUTION TO FIX THIS COMMON ISSUE”

SOLUTION!!!! iPhone X - at least work for me.... But you need to get your hands "dirty" it means you need open your phone! I’m not handyman or extremely clever, but it is easy job! I bought a toolkit unscrew few screws and then unplug (in my case it was face id camera) and suddenly iPhone boot back again. And I was able to make a proper backup. To keep it short just watch these two videos ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nSLiKGb... , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oU3n2El... ) And please do not spend money for 3th party software it is useless!! My iPhone X was stuck in a boot loop as well. I let it go completely dead (took about 1.5 days) hoping that it would refresh once charged for a few minutes. NOPE, still didn’t come on I let the battery die out again and left it alone for a few days and it came back on. YAYY! RIGHT!? Nope a few days later it went out again and came back on 10 minutes later. Now, here I am again and it went out, it have been out 3 days and still isn't working. I wasn’t thinking I should’ve checked the last back up. I’m scared to try any of the options listed because I really need some pictures and other stuff off of my phone. So by letting the battery run out, you were able to have your phone back working for a few days and then it went back on a bootloop? All I need is one day to back up my pictures that I dont want to loose.... then the phone can die, I dont care about the phone, I care about the photos and videos of both my kids that have been in my phone for the last 8 years or more.

And One more think, If you don’t want lose your data never restore to factory settings) Cheers!! Happy man with photos!!!

How is Apple okay with this I have years worthy of memories and pictures and travels in there so many important things. My iPhone told me it was full I went to delete nothing would delete so I decided to restart it and it went into the boot loop and there’s absolutely nothing I’ve been able to do to fix it. There is no way this is it. How can I iPhone just mess up like that. Apple should get sued for this. Nothing can even bring back those precious moments. Not a million dollars. This cannot be okay.

Update (06/29/2020)

Hi everyone,

It has now been two days and I’m completely devastated and depressed and anxious about this. I suffer from anxiety and it has been so bad since this. I created a fb group for support because I realized the amount of people who have gone through this is insane and it should not be happening especially to new phones. I think we should get together and sue Apple because their response to this is not okay. If dozens of us come together then Apple can’t keep just sweeping this under the rug. This is 100% an Apple problem and error. It would be different if it was water damage etc but it’s not. And with the amount of technology we have in this world in 2020 how had Apple not already made a fix for this. A way to preserve data even if the phone crashes or a way to bypass it so no data is lost. How do we have artificial intelligence but we can’t get precious irreplaceable memories back from our phones. This means Apple products are unreliable is that what Apple wants as their reputation?

My phone has 250gb worth of space I still don’t believe it was full. I got ONE notification for the very first time telling me it was full and I went to delete pictures right away. I actually had 100 in my recently deleted and thought it was perfect to give me some space to delete more. But they would not delete. I did the next normal things anyone would do which was to restart the phone as I thought it was glitching and it actually restarted but it wouldn’t properly load and bam went into boot loop. My heart completely sank in that moment and I haven’t been okay since then. New iPhone XS with screen and phone protector.

I had my 6s for the longest time. It would tell me all the time it was low on storage and I would just go and delete photos and apps and go on living my life. Not once did it ever crash on me and go into boot loop!

Everytime I think about my pictures I can’t help but crying I feel sick to my stomach. Thanks to google I have some photos backed up. I got my phone November 2018 and google backed up till July of 2019 but in this last year I didn’t realize how many precious moments I had in just one year. I had 5 trips on there 1 to Isrrael after my mom best cancer and also two birthdays trips and a very special 30th birthday party. Also had tons of pictures of dogs I’ve saved from my local kill shelter. Which is what I spent my time doing this whole lady year. Completely irreplaceable. It’s my birthday this week and I was so excited but I could care less now because it feels like I lost a year of my life.

Apple needs to respond to everyone’s new phones doing this. This is not okay. They cannot just throw up their hands at this problem and just tell you to restore. Loosing months or years of memories on a product you paid $1000+ should not be their answer! This is an Apple error and they must address it. How can data be retrieved from iPhones in floods and fires but not when it was an Apple error?

Here is the fb group. I had to create it on my boyfriends fb account for now as I am currently phone less. I will be trying to get another phone as I refuse to restore my iPhone and lose the chance of ever getting anything back. I have hope Apple will do the right thing and create a solution for this in the future. Please join and share so we can come together and make Apple listen to us.

I am with you 100%, I feel exactly the same way, I refuse to loose many years of all the memories of my kids,, my family and dear family members that already died. I will not just surrender to the "loosing all the data is the only way to fix this" solution. I will wait until Apple hopefully comes up with a solution.

This happened to two of my phones... iPhone X 2 months ago and now iPhone 11 pro...

For iPhone X I was unaware and had no idea it could happen, I knew the storage was full, I got a notification that it's full, I couldn't take pictures because of it so I deleted some and freed up some space, it let me take pictures but I didn’t because I didn’t want to fill up the storage. Then I couldn't open my apps so I restarted my phone and it got stuck on Apple logo. I went to Apple and all they told was to restore and delete everything. They told me even celebrities, politicians get this problem and lose all their data and live their life normally. I was like bruuuuh no. I'm a singer too, I had pictures and videos of me and other artists, I had videos of concerts, pictures from tours, trips and travels, moments of me and my relatives’ weddings, graduations, childbirth and etc…. There was a lot of stuff basically. Probably the most important thing for me which was in the phone is the information of my studies I’ve been storing it for about two and a half years (since I bought the iPhone X) for my exam which is next year. I can’t lose everything, I don’t have anybody who could give me the information.

After I made a scandal in the Apple store they told me that I can try and go to the 3rd party place, maybe they’ll help, because Apple doesn’t do stuff like data recovery. I remember even when my inner screen cracked and was glitching they told me they’ll delete everything I was like !&&* no. So now I went to that place and they tried everything, they tried updating but it showed Error 14. Of course.

Thankfully I had cracked my screen recently and I brought it to them and they had saved my whole backup in their computer. I put the iPhone X aside, I don’t want to restore it. I bought the iPhone 11 pro and they put everything in it. Then I did all data backup to iCloud ( because I didn’t do it with iPhone X ), it showed about 250 GB (literally everything what was in the phone. Pictures used about 220GB(I have 2 TB plan for iCloud) of backup in iCloud. That’s amazing, I thought my data and memories were safe. For a while.

After a month and a half of having the iPhone 11 pro I took a nap one day (few days ago) and woke up to my apps not opening again. And actually, it’s been happening previously after I bought it. I wouldn’t be able to delete any pictures and apps weren’t opening, I was afraid to restart because I thought it would get stuck again. So I’d just delete some apps to free up space and restart and it would be fine. This time it wasn’t fine. I couldn’t delete pictures, of course. My storage was stuck on 255.5 GB even though it was about 230 GB before. I deleted an app which was using almost 15 GB of my space and it was still stuck on 255.5 GB! Now I surely knew if I restart it it will get stuck on apple logo. After a while it showed that I won’t be able to call, text and use mobile data before I update my phone. I couldn’t do a quick new backup because I’d need to verify my Apple ID first with an SMS. But I knew there was an old backup, so…THEN, after another while it suddenly went from 100% to 1% (battery health is 99%) and almost turned off. I put it to charge at least a little bit. The next day I brought it to the same place they used to fix my phone all the time and told what happened. They tried to back up my files to the computer but computer didn’t show them. We checked iCloud and it showed a backup of 250 GB (not the files, just we checked backup amount). It was Friday and the place was closing already so I decided to come on Monday. The worker called me on Monday and told me that he came and found the phone on Apple logo (it was on charger all the time). I thought %#*@, okay, well, I don’t have a choice, I don’t have money to buy a new phone, just restore it. I still had the iCloud backup, yeah? So it restored and I could choose the backup. It showed the backup from last Friday (the day I brought it to fix). We thought maybe it was doing the backup but it didn’t show it maybe? Alright I decided to wait till the backup recovers. It finished updating but not all pictures and notes are there. Before that, I logged into iCloud on computer. I only saw a half of the pictures (obviously not the ones I needed) but the backup amount still showed 250 GB ( all of it ). It now finished updating finally and it’s still not here. Now iCloud backups show only a backup of 1 GB I did in 2018…. Where did the 250 GB backup go? And why it didn’t appear fully when I was doing the file restore from iCloud backup? Phone was always on WiFi and charger.

I’m still keeping the iPhone X hoping Apple will do something and help us all to find the solution for this issue and we all can get our data back. My friend told me I could try sending it abroad but as I can see Apple users worldwide are suffering from this ( I am from Lithuania ). This problem is growing day by day, I have hope Apple will think about it and help.

Also, I wonder, does this happen only for iPhone X and further or also to the older models? I saw a comment saying iPhone 6s never had this issue. Anyways. Cheer up everybody.

I’m devastated. My XS Max was sending warning errors about being full. I tried taking things off of it and could not do it. Then one day the apps weren’t working well so I restarted the phone and it wouldn’t start up again - got stuck in boot mode. After hours on the phone w Apple support we tried to download the new software and I keep getting error (47) which sounds identical to what others are getting with error (14). I am told that the iOS 13 has errors where a full phone becomes corrupt. I have all of my photos and videos of my newborn’s birth and young son, our family trip to Spain. I am so upset that Apple would let this problem occur. In the past when my phone was full I could take things off of it and now I’m told unsympathetically by Apple that I should know the phone can’t become that full. I do not have a back up because my plan was to take things off of the phone. Apple, PLEASE send through a fix in your iOS which allows this problem to be fixed. For phones to get out of recovery mode and to let the corruption problem be fixed. This is exactly one of the reasons why people switch to Androids. This is very upsetting and Apple I beg you to send a fix in your new iOS updates.

Same thingg happened to me. Iphone XR, storage full. Tried to backup on my computer, it got halfway and then said the iphone disconnected. I said i’ll try again tomorrow, and restarted my phone as it was being super slow and deleting texts. I got stuck on boot loop, and then now it is in recovery mode. I tried to update it on itunes, and I am getting the error 14.

I am beyond devastated, I’ve lost 2 years of memories as I have not backed up since then. I’m putting my phone in a drawer, and waiting until iOS 14 in hopes that apple will push out some kind of fix. If enough people bring it up, maybe we can get their attention. This is so ridiculous and heartbreaking to so many peopl.”e. How can a phone literally stop working at full storage? That sounds like a bug in the code to me

Just FYI, Tenorshare reiboot fixed my wife’s phone. This is an XS Max that might have gotten slightly wet when handled with wet hands near the pool. It was stuck in the apple logo - reboot cycle. Tried other advice to restore OS using itunes just got it stuck in recovery mode. iTunes failed to restore, giving error 4013. So I tried the tenorshare program to get it out of recovery mode. That worked, and not only that, but the phone is working normally again and all the data was intact. First thing I’m doing (in progress right now): backup everything before it goes on the fritz again.

I had apple logo boot loop. I tried tenorshare reiboot, dfu mode, force restart etc but nothing helped. My Face ID has some water damage due to few drops of water. So when I opened the phone and detached Face ID connection, it worked fine but at a loss of Face ID recognition. I backed all the data and had a technician replace the Face ID

Most bootlo issues tend to be hardware related.

Most commonly I find it to be the proxy sensor.

Bought iPhone because love taking photos but now can't get them because of this stupid apple problem. What kind of technology advancement they are making when can't fix these basic issue. I feel sick to my stomach that I can't get my photos back.

Happened to me the other day, Old IPhone SE bootlooped. Was trying to backup the phone to transfer to my new iPhone SE 2020. It had been almost full for months without major issue. One thing I noticed right before the boot loop is the System portion of storage would immediately grow if any space were freed up. Apple needs to be sued over this.

With so many cases I think we should sue or request iPhone collectively did that they restore our data’s by physical extraction, they may charge us but it still worth it as loosing data is devastating, I’m currently hospitalised after loosing my data to boot loops and updating , hope out joint complaints will make iPhone to bypass their encryption given that we have proved of our ownerships of the phones .

This is currently happening to my XR currently. I'm pretty sure it's because I had less than 1 gb of storage left. I would've definitely restored it but my phone hasn't been backed up since last year apparently. I don't want to lose my data. It has been at least 36 hours now that my phone has been stuck in a boot loop. I have tried the different button methods, let the phone die a couple of times, and I even went to the Apple store yesterday and they told me I could update the phone but they wanted me to sign some waiver that would say it's not their fault in case my data would be lost which made me hesitant so I just left. Does anyone know if updating the phone could actually result in data loss? I plan to update the phone through iTunes as soon as I can but I just want to make sure.

I had this problem 2 years ago with a two month old iPhone that was low on storage. I was devastated to lose precious photos of my twins while in the nicu. I still have the phone and periodically try to turn it back on hoping to someday recover the photos. I sent to a world renowned iPhone tech and was told basically it would take modern computers 30 years to bypass the encryption but to hold onto phone and maybe someday in the future it would be possible.

I had a strikingly similar experience. A little over 2 years ago I had my iPhone low on storage. It was under 6 months old and had precious pics/vids of my late pregnancy, newborn daughter, and her brothers. Our family memories gone. It was during 2020 lockdown. We talked to so many people as we were devastated with little we could do. Apple and Verizon were no help, to say the least. We were told by many tech companies that we also would not be able to get through the encryption. We could have sent it away to try, but I was too concerned. I haven’t tried it in quite sometime. I’m thinking of bringing it into Apple and giving it another go. I am confident there was a storage issue with that iPhone version. I’ve heard this similar story too many times. I’ve had several new iPhones now. Don’t ever let your phone get full on storage or even close to it. iCloud also fails. Don’t trust anything. Try to use other cameras more than your phone. Set a manual back up date to your computer and stick to it on a schedule.

I did let this slip up end of last year and something similar happened. We brought the phone to Apple. I was worried it was 2020 all over again, but this time there was no lockdown and we could go try to get help.  They were able to update and save my photos! It gave me hope and I hope it gives you hope as well. I was not able to do that with the phone I got toward the end of 2019. Whatever newest version that was at the time, we were not able to update it when it shut down in spring 2020. I’d say if you have a newer version than that (I’m sorry I don’t remember!) than hopefully you can get your photos back and update. Keep up with the updates too! We were told too many annoying times how that plays a part.

Take care and wish you the best of luck!

I will add that not only was Apple and Version not helpful, we were punished repeatedly for their failed devices. Charged and without any help all during lockdown. It has been a very painful lesson, one I’m still confused about. Please do not trust anything. Don’t trust your phones and do not trust those who supply them. Do not trust ICloud. It has failed me for years despite many efforts. There are many great tech experts and it is worth seeking their advice, even if it is a dead end. I hope one day everyone is able to recover their data. I know how devastating it is to lose. I was successful with an apple tech with a newer phone (updating and then getting the pictures back). There are certain versions I’m unsure if you’ll be able to get functioning again (for now).

Use other cameras.

Keep up on the updates.

Set a once monthly manual backup to your computer and other storage.

Keep the phone and keep researching. I’m going to have another go at my dud from a couple years ago and bring it in soon.

Edit- Verizon* lol

I also switched to T-mobile. I don’t think that necessarily matters, but who knows! I’ve had better luck and service ever since!
