Lenovo ThinkPad T410s Troubleshooting

"When I press the button to open the DVD tray, nothing happens."

Take a small pin and insert one end gently into the hole next to the button. This should eject the disc. Once the tray is open, use the button to see if the motor moves. If it doesn't, use this guide.

"I put a DVD in the drive but it my laptop doesn't register it."

Open the drive and find the small, square, silver lens next to the circle that goes in the middle of the disc. Dip the end of a cotton swab in water and gently wipe the lens with the wet end. Wait for the lens to air dry before closing the drive or placing a DVD on it.

In Windows, search for and open Device Manager. Click on DVD/CD-ROM drives. If there is no name for a CD/DVD drive when the category is expanded, this means the drive is not registered with the laptop.

To register the drive, hold the windows key and press R. This will open the Run dialog box. Type 'control' in the box and press Enter. Once Control Panel is open, type 'troubleshooter' in the search box and click Troubleshooting. Find Hardware and Sound, then click Configure a device underneath. Provide any confirmation if prompted.

In Windows, search for and open Control Panel. Choose Hardware and Sound then click AutoPlay. If Use AutoPlay for all media and devices is not selected, select it. Scroll down to the drop-down menus and select Ask me every time for ever DVD, Blu-ray, and CD option, the click Save.

"The keys on your keyboard do not respond, type the wrong character, or are stuck."

If the keys are unable to be pressed, there might be something below the key that is keeping it from lowering. Remove the key and check to see if there is anything stuck underneath it. It would be a good idea to clean off the surface below the key. Snap the key back on once you are finished cleaning.

If the keys are typing out the wrong characters, first check to see if the layout of the physical keyboard match that of the on-screen keyboard. If the layout does not match, change the keyboard layout settings and add your desired language to your language list. Then update the keyboards driver software under Device Manager.

"My ThinkPad is really hot and doesn't work like it used to."

This could be due to over usage on a non flat, dirty surface. If you use your laptop on your bed a lot, consider buying a cooling pad or a small pad that can hold your laptop.

This could be another overheating issue. If you have warranty for a laptop make sure to use it to your full advantage. If not, then continue with the guide. Every laptop has a back to it that contains the memory drive, the ram, the WiFi card, etc.. A big issue in overheating is that the fans of the laptop are dirty and need to be clean. Use the tool kit provided to you and remove the back cover of the laptop. Once you have done that, if you have a small air compressor, use that on the fans and try to take out any dust that has built up in the fans. If you do not have an air compressor, use a cotton swab and gently remove the dust from the fans.

You could try updating your drivers. Since the ThinkPad uses Nvidia, make sure to go on their drivers detection website and it should let you know what type of drivers you have and if they're up to date or not.

"My screen is black and won't turn back on."

The most common cause of the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s screen going black is the fact that the item is out of battery. You simply need to purchase another battery for the device and replace it. You can replace the battery by turning the device over and taking out the battery. You then put the new battery in and wait for your device to boot up.
