The left hinge of my MacBook is suddenly very stiff

Hello everyone!

A couple of days ago, the left hinge of my MacBook Pro started to be very stiff. If I try to close my screen, it pops back open. I first thought that there was something stuck in the hinge, but I didn’t see anything. I tried wiggling the screen a bit, but it only made it worse. I am also a bit worried that if I open the case, the hinge will be broken and instead of being stiff, it will be very loose.

I tried searching the web, but I can only find MacBooks with loose hinges instead of (1) really stiff hinge.

Has anyone seen this problem before? I hope someone can help!

Yes, we have seen this a few times!

Follow this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014 Lower Case Replacement

Get some WD40 spray it into the cap to concentrate the spray into a puddle (it doesn’t take much!). Use a Cotton Swab (Q-Tip) to dip it into the cap and then wipe the gap between the hinge.

Thank you very much for your help!

So I just need to remove the bottom plate and I can access the hinge?

Yes, let's first try the simple fix before we dig deeper. Don't soak it! It needs less than a drop.

Thanks!

I have exams for school this week (at home), so I'll try it next week. I don't want to do damage when I still need my computer.

I'll get back with my result!

It worked! Thank you very much!!

I doubted that this could possibly work, but I was wrong and it 100% worked! The hinge on my MacBook Pro 15" (2015 version) very quickly started to show resistance over two days about a week ago, and it's been rough ever since. It required a worrying amount of force to open and close, and it refused to stay completely closed, basically bouncing back open with about a 0.5cm gap in the front. I assumed I had somehow accidentally bent the frame and that it was not salvageable. Wrong!

I followed @danj 's instructions above, and my MacBook Pro's hinge is as good as new! I took a few photos while I had the bottom panel off in case it might help other people because the picture with "oil here" label appears to be from the screen's side, not from the bottom's side (with the logic board). Here is where I applied WD-40 with a Qtip, and I also took some time to carefully clean any dust and grime that had built up inside the case.

Thank you very much for this solution, @danj ! 🙂
