The April 2014 update of the 11" MacBook Air packs refreshed dual-core i5 and i7 Haswell processors and slightly increased battery performance.

Keyboard Backlight OFF when Camera Connected or after sleep

I deleted the previous 2 questions as this issue is obviously related to each other and was getting a little confusing so here we go....

MacBook Air A1465 11" 2014 (Big Sur 11.7.10) Recent fresh install.

SMC & PRAM resets have been done and Coconut Battery reports good normal battery health tested with 2 good batteries and there are no issues found in Apple diagnostics.

Original Issue: Camera was not working & 4 or 5 faulty Keyboard keys.

Replaced Keyboard (ALL keys are now working fine) & Antenna Assembly.

Camera is detected in system report hardware list.

All the ******connections are seated correctly, there are no damaged cables or connectors. There has not been any water damage, internally a very clean unit. All the parts used are fully compatible with this model of MB Air so there are no issues with compatibility.

Booting with the camera connected I have only a flashing green light on the camera (No picture) and I have no KB Backlight after closing photo booth or display brightness was automatically adjusting to very low at boot unchecked box and checked no difference was noticed. I then replaced the antenna with another.

Booting with no camera connected the KB Backlight is stable and working normally at all times.

As stated previously I changed the antenna assembly with one that had broken off WiFi connectors which we successfully have reconnected and the WiFi & Bluetooth functions as intended (the 1st replacement obviously had an issue somewhere and has now been returned for a replacement) and now the camera is working fine but there is no keyboard backlight at any time and the KB keys to adjust the BL are blocked out.

I have tried with 3 different known working camera units and other new TP cables but no difference was achieved in the outcome.

It is either a working camera and no keyboard backlight or a working keyboard backlight and no camera. Answers on a postcard please :D @oldturkey03 & @danj Also as a footnote boot time from power up is a bit 'delayed' maybe 6-8 seconds & the camera when it is working is quite bright with no deep colors, like the brightness is up, but there are no options to adjust the camera levels that I am aware of?

Yes that is the part I was initially saying the bIt has the board number printed on it)

par

@livfe - Just to be clear, all of Apples PCB’s have a board number, the Hall sensor board is no different. But, it’s not the main PCB number so don’t get lost here.

par

@danj Yes, now I know what to get replaced and hopefully it solves this issue... next the 6 or 7 stage lights will hopefully go away when I put it all back together.

par

@danj OK so we have replaced the sensor and the issue is still persisting, I notice when I push on the case by the right side SHFT Key, the screen will go bright and the stage lights are more brighter, when I stop pushing on this area the screen will go dimmer..... I love MacBooks.... now when I push on the case nothing happens.... but the initial issue still remains again.... I guess it needs a deeper inspection on the hall sensor rails. The stage lights are sometimes there and sometimes not but still can see a faint effect.

@livfe - Applying pressure is telling me one of the logic board screws is not correctly placed. It’s shorting something out.

Clearly you are having issues within the ALS logic. Within the camera is a second sensor which meters the light the camera needs to work within. This same sensor is used to adjust the brightness of the keyboard backlight and screen if the model offered it.

The fact you state the image is washed out from what is expected is telling us the sensor is not working or the logic within the logic board is not accepting the input either due to a bad connection or the logic on the logic board has failed.

There is also a second system used in conjunction with ALS that’s the lid Hall sensor which senses the lids state opened or closed.

The fact you stated the closing and subsequent reopening of the lid won’t allow the keyboard backlight to re-enable also points in this direction too!

Using a rare earth magnet what happens when you slide it across the Hall sensor just underneath the uppercase palm area along the side, where the magnet is located in the lid? Slide it slowly across the area, the display and keyboard backlight should flicker and then go out, if you back off they should stay lit.

If you have a spare logic board what happens when you slide it in? While that won’t get us deeper into which direction it should help in eliminating the issue as a camera and ALS sensor issue aiming us to the logic board.

Excellent diagnosis @danj I have a small magnet here (one from a 2012 A1278 lid) and when I slide it (But not touching) the lid magnets near the camera indeed the camera now has deeper colors like normal and the KB backlight is working again. I then close the lid for a minute or 2 and reopen the KB backlight was on, but once it goes off (set to 5 seconds) and I tyr typing there is no lights again and the no entry sign when using F5 F6 keys, the BL only comes on when opening the lid..... we are getting there :) When I open photo booth the KB BL comes on again.... and now it seems to be working fine until I close PB there is no BL and the no entry again. Close the lid and the screen brightness is going low again, and no KB backlight.....and is now back to the faded camera and NO BL dim screen lol.....Display is going high and low by itself if I mover the screen backwards or forwards 5 degrees or so....Auto brightness adjust now turned off and the display brightness is stable but still no KB BL.

par

@livfe - The Hall sensor logic is then the new focus. It’s likely the magnet in the lid is not in the correct place across the sensor or the sensor itself self is failing so there’s signal leakage.

par

@danj The magnets look to be in the correct positions, they haven't been removed. The sensor itself is located where? Hopefully I can get that replaced easily as I do have 2 spare donors available.

par

@livfe - Is on the underside of the logic board along edge with the ports. Locate the small board stand off that black transistor looking component is the Hall sensor. The stand off presses it against the case to be near enough to the magnet in the lid.

par

@danj That will get some heat tomorrow and a replacement in its place and hopefully all sorted! Dan to the rescue :)

Black part with the board number printed on it? Or on the I/O board? Hall effect sensor - screen closed
