MacBook Pro Charges When Off, But Not When On
Hello everyone,
I’m facing an issue with my MacBook Pro. When it's switched off, it charges while the battery is connected. However, when it’s powered on, the charging stops after a few seconds.
Another strange thing is that when I disconnect the battery and plug in the charger, the MacBook Pro turns on and runs without any issues.
I’ve already tried using a different OEM charger, but no luck. I even swapped the charging port, but the problem persists.
Has anyone else experienced this issue before?
Thank you! :)
Battery disconnected and charger connected. MBP running
Battery connected and charger connected. MBP Turned OFF and it is still charging without an issue.
Update (02/16/25)
@danj sorry i had no option to upload images by commenting.
Charger connected but not powered on (System start) Battery 77.2%
After 3min charging on
After 10min charging on
After 11min charging stopped
System shut down, Had to switch off and on the charging cable to get it to work again and disconnect from the machine. Now the system is off and charger reconnected.
Restarting the system and when the boot screen came on charging stopped again.
After restart the system and and the charging stoped.
After 2-3 min automatically start to charge again with the amber light on so i let it charge for about 5+ min
After 5+ min charging light turns green
MBP system battery info showing the battery is fully charged.
Update:
After about 30-40min finally it is showing 100% charge

What is CoconutBattery telling you? I can’t see the logic doing this if the system is fully working as designed. Testing without the battery won’t be a valid test.

@itsmeapple "I’ve already tried using a different OEM charger" what charger did you try and what charger do you have right now? After you changed the port, did you checked the voltage and amperage on your magsafe board connector to see what was the amperage draw from your power supply?

@itsmeapple - Can you please post a set of snaps of CoconutBatteries main window with the charger plugged in after you’ve allowed the Battery to discharge a bit (charger not connected) let’s say about 80%. Then plug in the charger and take a second snap after waiting a few minutes so Coconut has had a chance to be refreshed. Let it charge as you would with the system is running or just with the display turned off (with the charger still connected) now take a third snap around 30 minutes after the last. Now shut the system down let it charge up and restart the system and take the last snap. Make sure to label each snap so,we don’t get confused.
