Camera will not turn on

Camera does not appear to be powering on.

Faulty Batteries

Make sure that the battery pack for your camera is recharged. If it is fully charged and still not working, you might have a faulty battery. Cameras have an internal battery and an external battery, so if you know your external battery is fine you might have a problem with the internal one.

Broken LCD Screen

If the LCD is broken, then it might appear that the camera is not turning on. Press the shutter button and listen for the sound to make sure it is not the screen. If you hear the shutter sound, then your camera is on and the LCD is not working. See our guide for Canon PowerShot SX50 HS LCD Screen Replacement.

Wiring or Motherboard Problems

If none of these ideas work, then there is probably something wrong on the inside of your camera. There might be a wire or connection on the motherboard that is loose or disconnected.

Broken Power Button

Your power button's connection might be dirty or broken. If this is the case, you will need to remove the button and clean or replace its connection.

LCD screen is not working

When you turn the camera on nothing appears on the LCD screen.

Bad Batteries

Your batteries might be dead. Check that the battery pack is charged and installed correctly. If they need to be replaced, check our guide for Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Battery Replacement.

Old LCD

Your LCD screen might be worn out. It will need to be replaced. See our guide for Canon PowerShot SX50 HS LCD Screen Replacement.

Wiring or Motherboard Problems

There might be a broken or loose connection in the motherboard of your camera that needs to be fixed.

Cracked Screen

If you have a cracked screen, it is going to need to be replaced. See our guide for Canon PowerShot SX50 HS LCD Screen Replacement.

Flash is not going off

When you take a picture the flash does not go off.

Flash Setting

Your flash may just be turned off. Make sure the camera is in flash mode.

Dirty Flash Connection

If there is dust, dirt, or anything else blocking the flash connection, then the flash may not go off. Try removing the flash and carefully cleaning the inside with a cotton swab. The clean connection might fix your problem.

Low Battery

If your battery is too low, the flash will not go off. Try recharging your battery pack and once it is fully charged put it back in the camera and try to use the flash again.

Flash Bulb Burned Out

Sometimes the flash bulb is burned out. If this is the case, you will need to buy a new bulb to replace it. See our guide for Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Flash Bulb Replacement.

Faulty Flash Connection

If the flash connection is not working, then there is nothing wrong with the actual flash and you will need to replace the connection.

Eyepiece is loose

Eyepiece of the camera is loose or damaged.

Dropped camera

If you dropped your camera at some point, it may have landed on the eyepiece and damaged it. If this is the case you will probably need to replace the eyepiece. See our guide for Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Eyepiece Replacement.

Pictures are coming out blurry

All the pictures taken by the camera turn out blurry.

Low Shutter Speed

If your shutter speed is too low for the images you are trying to capture, your pictures will come out blurry. Try adjusting the shutter speed to a faster setting.

Auto-focus

If your lens is set to focus manually, then you will have to adjust the lens yourself to make the image focus. The camera will not focus automatically and your pictures turn out blurry if you do not do this. Try switching the setting from "MF" to "AF" and your camera will focus automatically for you.

I cannot download pictures from my Canon SX50 HS. It appears the software is not working. When I load the solution disk to re-install the software, I get a message "cannot recognize the device"

I'm having the same issue, started a few months ago. Any luck?

There is a clock displayed on my screen that is counting up and none of the setting work but it takes pictures. I press every button without result except shutter. The telephoto also does not work.

cannot delete photos. when I click the “delete” button or the “trash can” it says “busy”

michelle cruz - Réponse

The camera seems to re-read the SD card every time you go to “view” mode. It will report “busy” until it finishes reading. I noticed that it takes much longer now that my 128GB SD card is nearly full. You need to wait for it to finish (note the green light blinking, it will stay on solid when it finishes reading). I think you will be happier if you delete all (or most of) the old pictures and videos that you have already downloaded to a computer, my suspicion is that the time to finish reading increases with the number of pictures and videos on the SD card.

You might also try putting your SD card into a computer to remove files.

If that does not help, I would reformat the SD card in case it is corrupted and confusing the camera.

The USB port on my SX50 HS has broken and I can’t transfer data. Is there a replacement part that can be plugged in?

Will Ghormley - Réponse

My zoom lever has stopped functioning. What are the possible causes? I removed the cover over the zoom lever, and by itself it is “sticky” and not smooth anymore. I have pretty much eliminated the lens assembly as a contributor. I am quite puzzled by this.

Is there any adjustment or calibration possible on the auto-focus? I am sure my SX50 took noticeably clearer pictures when it was new. I have the image stabilization enabled, auto-focus enabled, shutter speed appropriately fast, sometimes with a tripod, sometimes with a 2 second or 10 second delay. It seems like the image being displayed in the viewfinder LCD (or LCD screen when on tripod) is crystal clear after holding the shutter halfway to set the auto-focus, but just as the shutter sound is made, it seems to get a little fuzzy for an instant. I upgraded to an SX70, but I am disappointed with it for similar reasons. Maybe I have just been spoiled by getting a T6i DSLR with an L-series 28-300mm lens, but I base this on comparing blown up images from when the SX50 was new with pictures taken recently with the same settings.

Where can I buy parts for this camera? I need the cable for the back cover and the lock down clip.

Thanks

I am not getting a view of what I am wanting to take a picture of. I can take the picture and it will show up on review on the LCD screen. But the screen is black when I want to take a picture. Any ideas?

jackieleu1953 - Réponse

Is the preview showing up in the viewfinder? There are 2 LCDs, the one on the back and the one in the viewfinder (since it is not a DSLR). Try pressing the DISP button to cycle through the display modes, which includes selecting which of those 2 LCDs is active. In addition to my SX50HS I also have the newer SX70HS, which has a proximity sensor that switches from the big LCD to the viewfinder when you put it up to your eye, but apparently the SX50HS does not. If the DISP button does not help, I would next try the RESET ALL function (MENU, then go to the right to the wrench and hammer tab, then up once to Reset All, then SET to do the reset). (Take all this with a grain of salt, I could not get mine to do what I think you are describing, so I am just guessing.)

Partial photo, partial black…

Internal flash stopped working. I tried resetting settings.

sewlady116 - Réponse

I have a power shot SX50HS. I was taking pictures and all of a sudden the picture display went black while I was taking pictures. The first 80 pictures came out clear and the balance of them were black as the viewer screen. I didn't drop it and the batteries are fully charged. Now the viewer shows only black and when I took a few shots the pictures came out black. Any advices
