Computer Unresponsive to Input

Moving the mouse and typing on the keyboard is not being picked up on the device.

Malware

If your computer is unresponsive to input at times and is not functioning correctly this may be an outcome from malware being on the device. Common malware symptoms are unsolicited tabs that randomly pop up on the screen and applications showing on the home screen that you did not download. If these symptoms apply to you see your local tech store where they have experts on dealing with viruses and malware. After having your device restored it is a good idea to invest in an antivirus software in which will help in preventing this situation from happening again.

Not Enough RAM

When the computer randomly freezes and is seemingly unresponsive to input this may be a sign of the device not having enough RAM to complete the task at hand. If the accessories are for sure functioning correctly then a memory (RAM) upgrade may have to be made.

Overloaded CPU

You may be CPU running more programs than it can handle. You may have too many tabs open on your web browser or have too many applications open at the same time. Try restarting your device, and if that does not work try holding the power button down or pressing ‘ctrl+alt+delete’.

Hardware Not Functioning Correctly

Another cause of your computer being unresponsive is that your keyboard and mouse may not be working correctly. A way to test this is to connect an external mouse/keyboard and see if those accessories work. If the accessories do work then the integrated keyboard or mouse may be malfunctioning in the device. See your nearest tech store for further help on how to solve this problem.

Driver Issues

If the problems above do not apply to you then your drivers may be responsible for your computer unresponsiveness. Drivers are software’s on your computer that lets the system interface with your hardware. Even if your drivers are not the problem it is still a good idea to keep your drivers up to date to make sure its running the latest and more effective version.

Computer is Overheating

The device is abnormally hot to the touch and runs slower than usual.

Overloaded CPU

A common root cause for overheating is that the CPU is running more programs than it can handle. You may have too many tabs open on your web browser or have too many applications open at the same time. Try closing some applications that are not vital to the task at hand. If that does not work you it is a good idea to check the task manager and determine what application is causing a heavy load on your CPU and end that task directly from the task manager tab. If that does not work try restarting your device and see if that helps.

Fan Malfunction

Another cause of your device overheating is that the fan is not cooling properly. Make sure when using your laptop, that you allow enough air flow to come through the bottom of the device. Ways to do this is to avoid using your device on your bed and instead place it on a desk or some sort of flat surface. If sufficient air flow is not the problem then the fan itself may not be functioning correctly. To check for this when the computer is on you can hear the fan running from the back of the device and if you do not hear this noise, it may be time to replace the fan on your laptop. See our easy to follow fan replacement guide for more details.

Crashed screen

The device screen is unresponsive and shows nothing but a solid color.

Overheating

Overheating is one of the main reasons that causes laptops to crash. See the overheating section for troubleshooting.

Faulty Display

Another reason for your computer screen crashing is that the display screen is malfunctioning. If the screen is blank or completely black but the computer still seems to be on and running, there is a high chance that the display is damaged. A way to check if its the display screen or not, you can plug in the laptop to an external display such as a TV or monitor and if the laptop is able to show up on the external screen that means that the internal display screen on your device is malfunctioning. In order to solve this problem the internal display will need to be replaced with a new one.

Battery Unable to Hold Charge

The computer dies if not plugged in, or is not able to charge at all.

Broken or malfunctioning Charger

Before jumping to conclusions and replacing your battery, it is a good idea to check if the charger is working correctly first. Make sure that that you are plugging in the charger into the charging port all the way and check the wall outlet to make sure its also in all the way. Test your charger with another device to see if its working or try to borrow another charger and use it on your device to try and find a common problem.

Outdated Hardware

A possible reason for your laptop to not charge is that the battery it self is damaged. Batteries lose its capacity over time so if the device is not holding its charge and you have had the computer for a while now, it might be time to get a new one and replace it. See our battery replacement guide for more in depth instructions.

Device Has a loud fan noise

The computer is outputting a loud fan noise coming from the back panel of the device.

Overheating

If the fan is moving abnormally fast and is creating a loud noise this may be due to the computer overheating and the fan is working over time in attempts to cool the device down. See our section on overheating for troubleshooting.

Debris in the Path of the Fan

If the device is not overheating but is still outputting a loud noise, this may be due to debris in the fan cavity. Most of the time the debris is dust building up and can be cleaned by using compressed air on the air vents of the back panel. If this does not work then there may be a different object in the path of the fan and will need direct removal. In order to access the fan the back panel of the device has to be removed . See our guide on removing the back panel here. After the panel is off look for the fan and see if there is anything blocking its path and remove it.
