Sennheiser RS 120 Troubleshooting

This page will contain issues that consumers may come across with this product.

No Audio Output

The headphones won’t produce any sound.

Faulty Battery

Make sure the two AAA batteries are placed correctly and that the headphones’ power is turned on. If the device doesn’t produce any sound and that the transmitter appears to be working properly then one or both or the batteries may be dead so they have to be replaced with new batteries. Please refer to this guide to replace the batteries.

Broken Audio Cable

There is an audio cable that connects to the transmitter. If this wire is damaged then sound may not travel thus no sound being produced through them.

Faulty Speakers

Make sure the batteries are properly placed and the device is on. If the batteries are good but the device won't produce any sound from either speaker, then the speakers in either ear may be faulty and may need to be replaced.

Sound Quality is Diminished

The sound is not clear. It may be static or patchy.

The Device and Transmitter are on Different Frequencies

The transmitter sends out a radio frequency that is received by the headphones; if the frequencies on the transmitter and the receiver on the headphones aren’t properly synced/tuned then the sound quality will be distorted. To solve this there is a tuner dial on the right side of the headset to adjust the frequency. Slowly turn the dial and listen for any changes. If the sound gets clearer, that tells us that the frequencies are lined up at that point, indicating it is properly tuned.

There is Interference with the Radio Frequency

If the headset and the transmitter are a certain distance apart or if there are mediums, as in, walls, in the way then that can serve as some interference which will reduce sound quality to the headset. Also, if you are near other devices that produce radio frequencies or near a radio tower, then the frequency that is output by the device or tower will cause interference with your transmitter-to-headset connection. To resolve this, try moving closer to the device and eliminate any other source of interference to see if that will improve the sound quality.

Sound Cuts in and Out / Distorted Audio

Unstable sound.

RCA Auxiliary Adapter Connection

The auxiliary adapter may not be plugged into the audio-playing device port completely, and as a result, it will have a patchy connection. Check to make sure that the RCA cables are plugged into the adapter correctly. If that doesn’t solve the issue, you may need to look into replacing adapter.

There is Radio Interference

See “There is Interference with the Radio Frequency” under Sound Quality is Diminished

Transmitter Is Not Powering On

Transmitter does not operate.

The Power Cord is Not Plugged In

Unlike the headset, the transmitter is not battery operated. It needs to be plugged into an outlet through its power cord. Be sure to check if it is plugged in properly.

The Power Cord is Broken

If the power cord is broken then the transmitter will not be able to turn on. This will result in no signal being sent and thus no audio being transmitted. The headphones will still make a static noise, just will not receive any transmission from your audio player. To solve this issue, the power cord will need to be replaced.

Disproportionate Audio

Audio is one-sided in strength / existence.

One Speaker is Damaged

If there is audio in one ear but not the other or if the audio output is weakened, it could be the result of a damaged speaker. If a speaker is damaged then the sound quality in that ear won't be completely functional. To fix this the speaker in the ear would have to be replaced. See Faulty Speakers.

A Wire is Damaged

If there is audio in one ear but not the other or if the audio output is weakened, it may just be a faulty RCA cable. One of these being damaged could result in disproportionate sound output.

The problem is with the base (Transmitter)

I had this problem and had to replace a filter capacitor in the base.

You may need to take it to a competent electronic technician to have it repaired (If you can find on these days)

Spontaneously, one day during the last month, I heard the audio from my headphone speakers skip 3 times in sequence but at random intervals. This behavior, at first, was hardly noticable because the occurrence was so infrequent. Although now, the same 3 skips pattern of sound output has massively increased in frequency to now happening every 10-20 seconds - sometimes even less. Has anyone experienced this or even heard of this happening??? What would cause the sound output to behave this way??? How can I fix this???

I have had the Sennheiser 120 for a long time with no problems. Yesterday I went to use the headphones and all I get is static. The tuner is suddenly not working. I have followed the direction of several sites. Most recommended unplugging everything and getting new batteries. I did all this and nothings changed. The tuner still doesn’t work. Do I just trash the headphones? It’s very frustrating. One day it works, the next day it doesn’t. Who do I contact. How do I contact?

The same thing just happened to me last night. I, too, have had mine for a long time. I’ve changed batteries and still just static. Did you, Elliot, ever find a solution? Thanks.

My rs120 works well for tv but no reception from netflix

Rob Simpson - Réponse

Hello. Suddenly my RS120 stopped transmitting anything; red "charge" light ok, but the green one stayed stubbornly dark, whatever the source of audio. And it was solved following the procedure on this page : https://en-us.sennheiser.com/what-do-i-d...

In short : disconnect both power and audio from the base, remove the batteries from the headgear ; let it sit like that for 15 minutes, enough time for the electronics to relax ; then plug the power back in the base, put the batteries back in the headgear, check whether the red "charge" light goes on, and finally plug the audio back in the base.

This works!! Thanks a million for posting this. We have a power company that chronically has power surges or outages that mess with all of our electronics. I hadn't seen it happen to my headphones until now. Your posting was perfect! Thank you!

I tried all above, but still no green light ! Any other suggestions?

Try some new batteries? I think you can just use standard (non-rechargeable) batteries for testing purposes. If that fixes the issue then order some new rechargeable type batteries.

I think it's just a community driver type board so members post answers to questions they may be able to help with.

No sound from right speaker. you suggested "change speaker". where to get new speaker and how to change speaker. from India, Chennai,

How about a diagram showing the correct connections on the back of a typical TV set with the red and white RCA input jacks - a location would be helpful rather than just say "make sure the RCA cables are plugged into the adaptor"

my Sennheiser TR 120 w use to be heard in garage and on the porch. does not work any more

The AAA batteries in my Sennheiser 120 Headset leak. I've replaced them twice with new AAAs and they leaked again, all over the contact points. I scraped away the battery discharge and got the headphones working again, but can't understand why the leakage keeps happening. I'm charging the headset while the batteries are installed. Is that a problem? Thank you. mike.leiderman@comcast.net

I have Sennheiser headphones RS170 , which worked perfectly until they didn't - cannot get them charged- is there a instruction booklet on the internet that I can look at?

Betty Brooks - Réponse

The red charging light doesn't come on. Green light is on

Marlene O Farrell - Réponse

1. Remove and replace the batteries, clean any corrosion from the contacts

2. If above doesn't work- change the batteries- use aaa NiCad NOT NiMH.

I have my headphones connected to my cable box. I pick up only one station. If I change to other cable channels the sound of the initial channel remains. I try to tune to the new station to no avail ??

Robert Kornacki - Réponse

I need help. I had my headphones on when on loo and when I turned to put lid down my headphones fell in toilet bowl. They did not really go completely in water but they are still charging on base but not working. If batteries did get wet should I try changing them. I have been using these headphones for roughly 12 yrs at least and love them. Has anybody any suggestions besides taking them off before entering the bathroom next time. Thanks in advance

june eggett - Réponse

In tuning I try to maximize the sound, however, the video/voice on the tv in not synced with the headphones. If I continue tuning I get this loud buzzing.

Tried moving that three position switch on the base of the union to no avail.

I have a second unit in an adjacent room with the same problem.

I have just replaced the batteries as well?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob K
